I just received this in response to expedite request for my I-765 EAD:

 

On June 15, 2017, we ordered your new card for Receipt Number MSC17XXXXXXXX, and will mail it to the address you gave us. 

 

Does anyone know if I need to wait for the card to arrive in the mail before I can accept a job and begin working?

Do you already have a SSN? You'll need the EAD for your I-9, which has to be submitted within 3 days of the beginning of your employment.

Like Mollie said, you need your EAD in hand within 3 days of your start date for proper I-9 verification.  My wife just went about this and her employer delayed her start date by a day to give buffer room for the card to come.  For us it took a full week from card in production to card in hand.  I've heard a number between 1-2 weeks is normal for delivery.
