You are fine to book a return and bin the return portion.

 

it depends on who you book through and travel with, but in my (very) extensive travel experience and all sorts of flight related geekery, I have found that in some cases you should not call the airline to cancel the unused return portion - they may reprice you to a one way full fare and chase for the (more than likely significant) difference in fare.

This can and indeed does happen (United scumbag airlines, I am looking at you).

Any tips on American Airlines, since for what people say not cancelling the return trip could be tricky with immigration?

Yes this is exactly what I was worried about our flight does happen to be American Airlines. How do I avoid the fee but ensure for immigration purposes that it doesn't look like he has left the country? Hmm... to cancel or not to cancel...

I can't see how it would appear you have left the US if you don't check in and don't get on the flight?  

That is the whole point of manifests and of APIS, which is a requirement for every US inbound and outbound flight following a fairly strict protocol. 

At any rate you would not have left the US anyway, so it isn't like you would be trying to re-enter having abandoned status before AP/completion of AOS. 

 

 

To be doubly sure, you could edit the APIS to gibberish/remove it entirely from the booking once the outbound has been flown, or alternatively (and far easier), just book the return for the furthest away date possible, which will probably be not far off a year.  Who knows, you may even get a chance to use it then.
