He was using an SKS. 

 

For those who may not be familiar, an SKS is an early 1940s design. I would put it in the same classification as say an M1 carbine or to a lesser degree an FN 49, or a MAS49.

 

Its a transitionary design when the world was moving from bolt action to gas driven designs. Its more prevalent than its western cousins because many combloc nations could not afford to quickly upgrade to AK designs. (Whereas for instance much of Europe transitioned quickly to the FAL over the FN49 and MAS).

 

Also, I doubt he fired 60 rounds given it was an SKS.

Yes, if you have enough property you can go shooting in your backyard or pasture with no consequence at all. Just as long as you understand what is behind your target you are good. I have done this many times growing up, just go shooting in the pasture and everything is good. But you have to make sure the bullets do not travel and possible kill/hurt someone.

And yet it doesn't sound like he understood anything about targets, safety, or making it possible to not cause injury to someone. Which is largely the same thing here (where you're not allowed to do it period - but they let you get away with it anyway), and is why people have ended up dead by drunken 'oopsies'. It doesn't sound like pew-pewing in his backyard was a common pastime for him, so I'd suspect it was a rehearsal - given that he took off shortly afterward and obtained a cc within that timeframe.

His neighbor, Bill Schaumleffel, had called to complain Hodgkinson appeared to be engaged in target practice outside his home.

While Hodgkinson hadn’t broken any laws, he agreed with an officer dispatched to the scene that it was probably better to go to a range to use his gun, St. Clair County Sheriff Richard Watson said.

Another neighbor, Cheri Borsch, said she called the sheriff's department on multiple occasions in 2015 and 2016 to report she heard rapid gunfire in the general vicinity of Hodgkinson's home. She said deputies came to investigate but brushed it off as probably someone shooting fireworks.

Indeed, he should not have had guns. I am flexible when it comes to sensible safety measures where guns are concerned, part of belonging to the MOR exclusive club. However I don't believe in gun free zones, or in restricting what guns someone can own with a few exceptions. We don't need extreme gun control we need to be sensible, and most of all just like the intelligence discussion the other day, we need to stay on top of the crazies.

I totally agree with you she must have known a little something about what he was thinking or planning. But she might have been relieved that he was finally out of her hair and she could move on. I can see it either way really.

DV = automatic loss of right to own / possess.  In addition to states not participating in the mental illness reporting system these charges are not followed up on either.

How did that feel?  Lay off of peaceful, legal, responsible gun owners and focus on the problem (individual) next time.
