Austria Bans Islamic Dresses for Women, Mandates 12-Month Integration Course

Austria has passed a controversial law that fines women who wear Islamic dress covering the whole face, and takes away welfare benefits from immigrants who fail to learn the language.

“Those who are not prepared to accept Enlightenment values will have to leave our country and society,” reads the text of the law, RT reported.

Earlier this year, the draft law drew thousands of protesters against the government and parliamentarians, but it was passed by a centrist coalition last month and now was signed by the president.

According to the law, women will face a fine of €150 ($168) if they wear Islamic dresses, either the niqab or the burqa, in public places. In addition to the fines, all new migrants coming to Austria to live will now be forced to take a 12-month “integration course” that includes German language lessons if they wish to receive any welfare benefits.

In light of cultural doormat leftists being perfectly okay with terrorism and foreign cultures dominating their lives, it's nice to see a country stand up for their values for a change.

We also speak a very similar dialect of German, so bonus points for them. :jest:

The integration course or denial in benefits is something I'd love to see in the US and Canada alike.

doesn't sound like a very american thing to do.

I think that if you don't live here, you'd want America to be more like the socialist countries in Europe. The winning is just unrelenting!

i also want to know how forcing immigrants to take a course in english is going to thwart terrorism. but, i've heard those with backwards thinking like mine just love terrorists so maybe someone not so cool with terrorism could break it down for me?

Actually, I am not sure what immigration and terrorism have to do with each other. None of the 9/11 highjackers were immigrants. They were all students or tourists. In addition, McVeigh was born and raised in the US, as were Kaczynsky, Holmes, Lanza, Zimmerman, Mateen, and so many other terrorists.

I (L) the Constitution so I am thoroughly uncool with bans on religious dress. I would go so far as to say that rejecting freedom of religion is the rejection of Enlightenment values.

+10! I don't see anything wrong with yarmulkes, habits, and other religious regalia, not to mention the complete asinine unconstitutionality of effecting any ban based on religion, be it sartorial, or travel related.

I suspect Zimmerman is a closet-Muslim, among other closet-related attributes.

To the left, to the left
Everything you own in the box to the left
In the closet that's my stuff, yes

Austria has been at odds with Europe for some time. Was a surprise election result. Not only are they fed up with the refugee problem but tired of Europe trying to impose on their sovereignty. Shengen is small potatoes as to what will happen if the EU doesn't heed the warnings.

It is not so much about learning english as it is about freely integrating people into mainstream society and culture, thus opening up opportunity to them.  Are you commenting against that?  Does segregation, self-imposed or otherwise, work out so well in the US?

There is no such thing as "Islamic dress".  Niqabs (face covers) are banned in Mecca itself.  They are not religious they are cultural.

Burkas are worn in only a handful of countries and are not "Islamic" either.  They are cultural as well and every single one (100%) of the very few countries that require them have dismal records in the areas of human and women's rights.

So they represent nothing more than an additional burden of religious authority on the women who live there.

People can be integrated into mainstream society without integrating the nutjob and subjective extra-cultural views and laws that created the societies they run like hell from.
