Hey all,

So I haven't yet received my packet from the embassy; however, I have received my NVC case number/invoice number (by calling NVC). Am I ok to fill out and submit the DS-160 at this point? Or should I wait longer?

Also can I schedule my medical appointment now? I guess generally, what things can I do now vs. what things do I need to wait for?

Hello,

Yes, you're allowed to fill out the DS-160 with the case #. Note: the NVC case # is the same as your Embassy case #.

You may schedule your medical exam, but it's not recommended until you schedule an interview with the Embassy. The medical center will probably want to see your interview letter before allowing you an exam. Otherwise, you can call and ask them to confirm.

You can look into getting your Police clearance right now. You typically don't require an Embassy letter to request a PCC.

Prepare for the visa fee payment by checking your preferred method of payment (I personally think paying through a bank is safer and faster).

Other than that, I don't think you can do much without knowing how long the wait for an interview is.

Visit USTraveldocs and you'll find really detailed explanations of the process in India.

Thanks for the reply! My fiancee is currently in the process of getting her PCC made so that's good. I heard the medical appointment has some validity period so it's best not to do this early, any idea if this is true? Also, I should add that I called NVC and they advised me to wait until the embassy receives my application before I submit the DS-160, so I'm not sure if I should do it.

Yes. The medical is good for 6 months. The K-1 visa will be valid for 6 months from the medical or the interview, whichever comes first.

The PCC will be valid for 6 months as well (usually...I do think some country's PCCs are valid for up to 1 year actually).

Correct. That's the official workflow...although as long as the CEAC status is Ready, you can do it.
