I already knew Albertans were special.

It's interesting why some people spell things differently..

Like MA and "license". NJ and "twelve", YT and "Altar", Hawaii and "people", etc.

The one word I always have problems with is "occaision". I can never remember if it's two c's or two s's. And the fact that the VJ spell checker underlines them both in red as being mispelled doesn't help matters either.

Occasion also doesn't have an i before the s

I don't know my Canadian territories but...are we sure the blue one isn't just spelling it Color because they want to be like America?

Yes they do in words like litre, lustre and theatre. They also use the "our" in place of the US "or" in words like favour and colour. And they also substitute "que" for "ck" in the word cheque.

They're more accustomed to American media and spelling in Ontario (good percentage of Canadians live within short distance of the border so they tend to get OTA broadcast signals) so makes sense. Even Albertans I find tend to spell things the American way rather than British English. A lot of business and education info tends to be in American English even in the Canadian versions of educational textbooks.

But really for me the adjustment to that form of English wasn't difficult anyways given I'm multilingual. I think the toughest words for me are the ones that modify the way I'd pronounce the word like enrollment vs enrolment (subtle) or aluminum vs aluminium (more obvious).

Does Canada have an aversion to 'U' as well?

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

There was coverage in the US MSM of the UK elections and they all seemed to be able to spell Labour correctly so why not normally?
