Got my Canadian tax return today, QUESTION!

Hi everyone,

 

So today, I received my tax return from Canada. I read over the mail I received on the CRA website about my return and reached the "explanation of changes and other important information" section.. Everything went well and a few things were changed, but there is one part that I'm confused about. Here is a snippit: 

"We changed your federal tuition and education amounts from $0to $****. We also changed your Ontario amounts from $0 to $****. We included unused federal tuition and education amounts of $**** from prior years and unused provincial or territorial amounts of $**** from prior years.

Based on this assessment, you have unused federal and Ontario tuition and education amounts of $**** and $****. You can carry forward these amounts to later years. To make sure we calculate your unused amounts correctly, you need to file a return each year, even if you have no income to report."

The numbers are blanked out for privacy. Can anyone explain what I should do? I really don't want to file a return every single year.

What makes you think you need to do anything, they're just telling you that you have credits in those areas which can be contributed to in the future, which you likely won't because you've moved here and won't be filing Canadian tax returns if that was your exit return. You don't have to file a Canadian return unless you have Canadian income, which you likely won't.

If you prefer, and have no plan to return to Canada or have Canadian income, you can transfer those credits to some family members.
