When to do name changes on SSN/Passport?

I'm currently doing AOS from K1 and have just done my biometrics appointment today. My I-94 expired last May 28. When should I take care of name changes (to my new married name) for my SSN and passport? Should I do it now, or should I wait until I get my EAD/AP or GC? 

 

Not sure if important to note, but I got my SSN back when I was studying (and worked for a year after under OPT) in the US in 2012.

I would wait until you have your GC and then get the name changed in your passport. Some embassies, e.g. the German embassy in Atlanta requires to have a valid Green Card in order to get the last name changed.

It all depends on the embassy but I don't think that your EAD is enough proof for them. For the SSN you have to wait until you have your EAD is in the mail because your I-94 is already expired. Take your EAD, your marriage certificate, your old SSN card and your passport with you. And then you should be fine.

I filed for AOS on December 20, changed my name on the SS card on December 29, got my new passport on February 16.

 

I obviously still have my old passport too in case anyone would like to see the K-1 visa and entry stamps in it.

Personally I think it would just be easier all the way around with your green card. You can still travel to the Phils if you wanted (just bring your marriage certificate). If you are not planning on traveling then it really doesn't matter. I think Joan had a minor headache at SSA with the EAD, but not huge. She took care of her then new passport after getting her green card. It went pretty smoothly. Good luck.

Thanks all! I'm not in a rush, so I think I will just wait until I get my EAD to change my name on my SSN card and wait for my GC to renew my passport. If I decide to go back to the Philippines before I get my GC (which I think would be unlikely anyway), I'll just bring my marriage certificate.
