What are Given names? Please Help...

Does the passport say: Given names: first name fathers name grandfathers name and Surname: family name?

Then put it the way as someone said above and the way you put at the beginning. First name -your given name, middle name your father's and grandfather's name. It won't be a mistake. Whatever you put there, this is how it will be on your green card.

But you can also chose to list it as your middle name if you want to. It's a choice really. My husband decided to use his patronymic name as a middle name. It doesn't mean that doing that is 'wrong', he just wanted to.

 

@abe.wichner in your case, since you go by one name I would list that as your 'given name' and put the others as 'middle names'. Otherwise your entire 'name' will be listed as all of them together (so I'm guessing).

Folks there's no middle name field. There's only Given Names field and Surnames field

Then list whatever's in your passport for your Given names, the names have to match your passport for the DS-260.

 

When it comes to the names on your green card you can choose to have one name as your given name and use the others as middle names.

When is that? Is this on DS 260? Because the form I'm filling is DS 260

Ok now I'm so confused. An immigration office in Jordan told me that First name is the Given names but the lawyer in the US says otherwise

don't be confused. your first name is your given name indeed.

since you are filling out DS-260, grab your passport and write all the names that are in the given names section on the DS-260. Then type in your family name in the corresponding field. The information on the DS-260 has to match your passport exactly.

It's because we don't have your system in the US. Therefore, there can be room for interpretation and confusion. Maybe find some other VJ'ers from Jordan and ask what they put? That might be your best bet.
