Oh wow!  Thanks for that information.  I didn't know that.  I will tell him.  You've been a tremendous help!

No worries, saw a lot of problems for other people when I was doing my k1 with this issue I decided to make sure I had all mine before or at the medical.

I had to pay for my flu and tetanus injection at Knightsbridge as I was up to date as far as the nhs were concerned (under the nhs in my home town flu shots are only if you have an underlying medical condition like asthma and you are only given five tetanus shots in a lifetime unless you cut yourself and are exposed to it so we don't have one every ten years here) but it was worth it to know that it was complete and I shouldn't need to have it redone.

The only issue you might come accross is if he hasn't had chicken pox as we do not get the varicella injection in the U.K. So it won't be available.

I could imagine!  I have had my fiancé getting anything and everything taken care of while he is still in England.  He was lucky to be able to get the vaccinations done short notice at his GP for free.  I know the cost of healthcare over here and would prefer he handle what he can while he is still there. Haha.  He has a dentist appointment next week and then flies over the following week.  Nothing like jamming it into the last minute. :P

I am so excited for you!  It will be nice to get the medical and interview process over.  We can't even pick a wedding date!

The last I knew of, the varicella (chicken pox) vaccine was not mandatory here, but maybe that has changed.   Will check into it.  Thank you for the heads up!  I'll have him check into making sure everything is up to date.

It might not be required in your state but it is required for the visa if you haven't had chicken pox, odd I know but getting a visa is about jumping through hoops as much as anything.

here is the chart, will only need the ones corresponding to his current age to be up to date.

Yes, I am so glad to finally be coming to the end.  We had tentative dates set in our heads from the beginning and we lucked out that everything fell in line and we have met every one of them.  So we are flying him over on the date we originally intended and our family beach trip and then wedding date that we planned will work out nicely after he gets here.  It is such a relief though to have the medical and interview behind us.  Good luck to you guys with everything!  Hope it all goes as quickly and smoothly as possible!

Chickenpox is not routinely given in the UK. That being said Knightsbridge will take your word for it if you tell them you've had chickenpox (most people have been at some point in their youth).

The vaccinations are as follows:

UK Beneficiary

  1. Go get your photos done. You're going to need 2x UK size and 1x US size. The two UK size photos are for your Medical and for your Police Certificate. Your US size one is for the Embassy – no longer do you need 2 of them, only one as they scan them in digitally. US size photos can be done at most photo booths at a cost of around £7 for 4 photos.
  2. Go to your NHS doctor and get the immunizations you will need for Adjustment of Status. You can get a K1 visa without having any shots, but you will need them before AOS. It’s extremely wise to take care of it before getting to the US so you can avoid civil surgeon hassles and $$$. Many NHS doctors will do them for free, but they are not obligated to do so for immigration purposes. Get the shots documented by your doctor to take to your visa medical exam. If your doctor should say you don’t need something on this list, remember you have to go by US rules and that differs from UK standards. Here are the shots needed for 19 through 59 years of age:
    • Td or Tdap - Tetanus/diptheria/pertussis or get DT, DTP or DtaP and it will be accepted for AOS also. The latest shot must be no longer than 10 years ago or you need a booster. If you have a record of receiving pertussis, then the Td is okay for the booster.
    • MMR - (if born in 1957 or later)-Mumps/measles/rubella. It's two doses in your life, but if you get the first dose, and 4 weeks haven't passed by your medical, they will waive the second dose for "insufficient time interval". If you only had one dose as a child, get a second one before the medical.
    • Varicella - Not routinely given in the UK . A history of having chickenpox excuses you from the shot. They take your word for it at the visa medical exam.
    • Influenza – Required during flu season only, October 1 through March 31. This was a new recommendation dated November 2010 for all ages over 6 months. Older lists will say flu shots for over age 50. It changed. The list on the London embassy website is out of date since 2009. Don’t follow it. Typically people will get the vaccinations at their GP or Boots which is far more affordable than dealing with it at Knightsbridge. They will record what you have when given proof. You will get a copy of DS3025, which you can send a photocopy of with your AOS. Make sure it is two pages and they filled it out correctly
    • Other option is to get vaccinations stateside at a pharmacy or even a walmart. Keep the proof and take it to a US Civil Surgeon to transcribe onto I-693 vaccination portion ONLY (it will be partially completed). Finding a Civil Surgeon to do this can be a hassle - they can charge what they want, some are a pain and want you to shell out $$$$ on a full medical. There is a list on VJ of doctors though.

BTW, a good civil surgeon stateside will only charge a small amount for a vaccination transcription and it only takes about 10 mins of time. RFEs happen because of Knightsbridge not filling out the form correctly (or not giving you the second page), missing paperwork, or an AOS officer not understanding stuff. From a personal standpoint I'd still only deal with the US civil surgeon stuff if only an RFE happens. It's always better get stuff done in the UK, but deal with Knightsbridge as little as possible when it comes to vaccinations. You'll need to get the medical done there but for vaccinations it's expensive and often give out wrong info. You just need to make sure they fill out the DS3025 form correctly.

It took 100 days, which isn't horrible compared to some, but there were others done in 85-90 days and I had begun to worry.  Either way, it seemed like absolutely forever!
