few questions about filing

Hello, I am getting ready to send my citizenship application (N400) I had few questions, please forgive me if some of these can be answered online but i couldn't find answers.

thank you for any help!

1. Once I fill out my application do I mail it in inside just a regular envelope or do I need one of those large envelopes where i don't fold the application/check?

2. for the question where it says " have you ever not filed a federal or state tax since you became a permanent resident" - I did not file 2008-2010 since I was a dependent under my parents. I worked very little and made way below the requirement to file taxes according to the IRS, do I need to check "yes" and attach an explanation saying that I did not make enough money or what should I do?

3. I don't have to include my tax returns with my application do I? I was told just to bring them to the interview in case the agent wants to see them. how many years back do I need to bring? I read somewhere that it's 5 unless you are married to an american citizen which I am (been married to a US born citizen since 2015) I was able to print out a document from the IRS web site stating that I do not owe any taxes/paid my taxes and that there was no 1040 filed for me in 2014 since I made $60 that year. do I need to bring anything else for that 2014 year to prove that I did not work or just the explanation?

4. My green card expires May 2018. do you think it's enough time to get everything taken care of and get my citizenship? if my green card were to expire close to my interview what do I have to do?

thanks once again!

1.  Mail it any way you like.  A flat envelope is probably better and neater.  On the outside of the envelope, put "ORIGINAL N-400" so that the mailroom people can more easily know what's inside.

2.  Do it.

3.  Read the N-400 instructions carefully, interpret them literally, and answer questions completely & accurately.  Bring absolutely everything possible to your interview -- it's better to have it and not need it than the converse.

4.  It should be ample time.  You'll remain a Permanent Resident regardless.  If it happens that your green card expires before everything is wrapped up, perhaps keep in your wallet a copy of a USCIS "we've received your N-400 application" letter (or a copy of any later letter), if it makes you feel better.

Good luck!

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
