The update 'date' on the USCIS page will indicated when it was updated, and what has been done to it. Everytime when it's updated, there's a touch. However, sometimes it is also touched and something was done to it.

Make sure you're not checking the processing times of the service center. If you still are lost, you need to register your application number in C.H.R.I.S. To access this option, login to USCIS homepage, and click on check status link. This will enable you to register.

There's no time like the present to start learning the terminology. You "filed a petition" that when approved, will qualify your foreign spouse to "apply" for a visa. You want to know the status of your petition, while in the hands of USCIS and the status of your case, while in the hands of NVC and the Consulate or Embassy. The "application" will hopefully result in granting a visa. "Applications" don't really have status reports.

Since this is a group of people helping each other, it is incumbent upon the members to do what they can to help. A posted timeline helps everybody else, and you don't have to be any kind of expert to post yours. Please do.
