Greetings everyone,

I want to give a little background about myself to those interested. I am a DACA recipient who came to the US as a child and my mother petitioned for me under category F2A when she became a resident a few years ago (she is now a US Citizen). Although my visa has been available for years it is only until now that I can begin the consular process because my I-601A waiver was just recently approved and the NVC has already been notified.

Now, I was putting together the supporting documents when I discovered the following bombshell in the NVC reciprocity schedule for Colombia:

"Military Records:  Unavailable. Colombian citizens over 18 years of age should have their Military    Carnets (Libreta Militar), First Class for those who have served with the armed  forces and Second Class  for those who have obtained an exception."

I immediately contacted the NVC for clarification since the language is rather ambiguous and after speaking with three agent this is the best answer I got: while the NVC might not require this document in light of the fact that I grew up in the states and never served in the Colombian military there is a possibility that the consular officer at the interview will.

I have since spent hours online trying to determine if there is a way for me to get this document from abroad and there isn't any. I can apparently get a provisional card (tarjeta miliar provisional) through the official recruitment site but, according to endless comments on many forums, it is a slow and sometimes outright pointless process, i.e. many people end up having to report in person even if they submit the information online.

I e-mailed the Embassy in Bogota twice but I got an e-mail stating to direct all my questions to the NVC, even though I explicitly told them that the NVC is not helping.

Does anyone know from first hand experience if this document will in fact be requested of me at the interview?

Thank you in advance for any insight.

Actually, NVC helped you -- according to what they said, not having the document will apparently not hold up your case at NVC, but they cannot speak for the Embassy.  The Embassy cannot speak about a case they do not have, as they do not have all the details.  Once your case is at the Embassy, you will be in Colombia and able to deal with the issue in person.  Not sure what other answer you're looking for.

Jan22,

The problem is that I cannot afford to go to Colombia and stay there in limbo for weeks or months because I will lose my job here in the US. Obtaining the document I mentioned is a long and expensive process that is very confusing even for Colombians in Colombia who don't need it for immigration purposes. It's clear to me that the NVC agents are giving me their personal interpretation of the language hence the lack of consensus, which is why I had hoped to hear from Colombian males who had gone through the consular process.

At any event, thank you for your input.

Hi,

I am sorry  I cant answer your question (I am a woman) but just curious. This is the very first time I see a simliar case to mine. Usually it is about a spouse petitioning for the other. My mother is also filing a petition for me. My i601A waiver was also approved. Have you received an interview date yet? Would you mind if I also ask you when was your waiver approved? and how long it took you to receive a date if so?

Mine was approved on July 17th, but I have not received an interview date yet; i know it takes a little time. I am from Colombia as well.

Thank you and good luck to you!
