Do you have an account with the USCIS online status updates? You can turn off phone notifications for a while, see if that helps, then turn it back on to receive future updates.

It seems to have stopped. Thanks. I guess USCIS was just as excited about the news as we were...

Hey guys I have a doubt...my status changed to card being produced on EAD but nothing changed about AP, does that mean that I won't get AP? Did anyone that got "Combo Cards" have been in the same situation or both status changed before card was mailed?

Thank you in advance.

From what I have seen as I obsessively searched through older cases to get an idea of what to expect, it is actually less common for the status of the AP case to change. So don't worry. I was a surprised to see it change for me. The whole online status system that they barely update really is cruel and unusual punishment...

From what I have heard, they will approve the EAD and AP together even if the AP is not updated online.

Hi everyone,

So my wife has been in the USA a little over 6 years with F-1 student status. She graduated last year from a masters program and is currently working with her OPT status (post completion). Her OPT (Optional Practical Training) expires in a couple of days and we are wondering what steps we should take to expedite her EAD. I have provided our timeline below.

Her drivers license expires tomorrow and the only way to renew is to provide her pending EAD at Maryland Motor vehicle administration. Also she started a new job two weeks ago and they require her to provide updated work authorization document when her OPT expires.

Please feel free to ask me questions if that is going help you understand my situation better.

01/2010: First Entry F1 Student Visa

01//2016: Last Entry F1 Student Visa
09 /2016: Started working on OPT (F1 Visa)
05/12/2017: Married

06/19/2017 - Mailed I-130 (G-1145, I-130A) & I-485 (G-1145, G-325A, I-864, I-765, I-131, I-693)

06/21/2017 - Delivered Chicago Lockbox

06/28/2017 - USCIS Cashed check

06/29/2017 - I-130, I-485, I-765 & I-131 Received notification via text and email

07/08/2017 -  Received I-797C in the mail for ASC Appointment Notice (Biometric) scheduled for 07/18/2017 1pm

07/26/2017 - Got a notification online saying "we are ready to schedule your Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or to Adjust Status, Receipt Number MSCxxx, for an interview. We will schedule your interview and send you a notice"

Don't worry you will receive the combo card. My AP status still says "name updated" and my EAD shows "card mailed". When i received my EAD it said on there serves as a travel document. Congrats.

My husband’s status didn’t change. It still says case received even though he has the card in hand

I don’t know if it even worth it to try and expedite it because you’re probably a week or so of having it approved...do you have anyway to make an infopass at your local field office? I think that would be best to take a letter from her employer and all documents to the field office to see what they can do for you.

Now about her drivers license, it’s funny because it was actually a friend of mine that is in Maryland that told me that I could get a drivers license with the NOA1 of the I-485 (like she did in Maryland, regardless of the fact that she was illegal for over a year)...I got my drivers license with my I-94 also expired for couple of

months and it is valid for a year from the date that I applied, all that I brought with me was I-94, passport, all my NOA1 and prof of address (I didn’t have to do a test because I have a previous and expired drivers license here in Florida).

I think you should try it again because the person beside the woman that took me at DMV was trying to convince her that I could not have the drivers license with a expired I-94 and she had to go to the law book and show it to her friend to finalize the process. Depending on the person that takes you, if they have never been across the same situation, they won’t make much effort to help you.

Good Luck!

So after reading your reply (Thank you), I visited the Maryland MVA website and for non- U.S. citizen drivers license renewal they require the following

  • Current temporary MD driver's license.
  • Updated documents proving your legal U.S. presence.
  • Social Security number or proof of your ineligibility.
  • Payment.

My take on this is, depending on their interpretation "document proving your legal U.S. presence", the I-485 NOA1 might fly. So we are going to try again as you suggested. Hopefully we get lucky :)

Regarding her employer, she works for an international organisation and they actually help employees acquire G4 Visas. she already went through the first screening and she is eligible for the Visa. The problem is, G4 visas are typically applied for at a U.S. embassy or consulate. Meaning she would have to travel outside the U.S. possibly a neighboring country for example mexico to get the visa (her boss asked her to do that if her EAD is taking too long). I see this as an unnecessary cost and very time consuming especially when we might possibly receive her EAD anytime from now (fingers crossed). Moreover with Trump, i would not advice anyone to travel outside the country if you have any pending immigration benefits.

I guess the point I'm trying to make here is i'm not sure if her employer will be willing to give her a letter of that kind since they provide alternative visas to work in the U.S for their foreign nationals. We will definitely give it a try and ask for the letter anyways and look into getting an infopass at the Baltimore field office.

I see a lot of pressure coming her way at work if she doesn't get her work authorization documents sorted out soon. Most likely we would have to push for an infopass simultaneously as we wait for her EAD.

Thank you so much for your help.
