How G.O.P. Leaders Came to View Climate Change as Fake Science

The Republican Party’s fast journey from debating how to combat human-caused climate change to arguing that it does not exist is a story of big political money, Democratic hubris in the Obama years and a partisan chasm that grew over nine years like a crack in the Antarctic shelf, favoring extreme positions and uncompromising rhetoric over cooperation and conciliation.

There is absolutely no question in my mind the source.  We are no longer living in a true representative Democracy, but an oligarchy, and have been for some time.  Sure, we still technically elect our congressmen, but it is the well-oiled corporate machine that feeds their campaigns and sways their rhetoric.  Corporations have but just one sole purpose, PROFIT, and will do everything they can to ensure that bottom line, and, with decades of experience, do it extremely, almost admirably well.  Corporate lobbying and spending has Washington in an utter stranglehold and will perpetuate lies when their bottom line is threatened through their lapdog politicians until half of America believes them in a propaganda machine that rivals Hitler's.  It's really extremely difficult  to move forward in the true interests of the common man in the face of this.

It's also why the Republican Party is the only ruling party in the world that has denied the science on the matter, not to mention pulled out of the accord besides Syria, and we are the only developed country in the world to not have some form of single-payer/universal health care.

Lobbying has been the biggest scourge on this country. Everytime you hear a candidate say they are going to Washington to change it don't believe them because eventually like in every case Washington changes them.

Corporations and their lobbyists hold all the power, they can literally bribe a congressman into voting on a bill in their best interests rather than what is best for the country.

The only way to take the USA back towards a democracy is to ban lobbying altogether.

The Republicans are the worst, like you said they're the ONLY collective in the entire first world who deny climate change and won't accept universal health Care.

Understanding the US health system is tough for me, in Ireland medical care is reasonable and available for all. So when I see a quote like above I tend to have a little Google to try read up and the first hit was from yesterday which states the opposite to what you just said.

"Yet as Democrats regroup from their 2016 defeat, leaders say the party has plainly shifted well to the left on the issue, setting the stage for a larger battle over the health care system in next year’s congressional elections and the 2020 presidential race. Their liberal base, emboldened by Senator Bernie Sanders’s forceful advocacy of government-backed health care last year, is increasingly unsatisfied with the Affordable Care Act and is demanding more drastic changes to the private health insurance system.

In a sign of shifting sympathies, most House Democrats have now endorsed a single-payer proposal. Party strategists say they expect that the 2020 presidential nominee will embrace a broader version of public health coverage than any Democratic standard-bearer has in decades."

You are absolutely correct that corporations are interested in earning profits as this is their lifeline to staying around.  The alternative is Socialism and we all know how well that form of economy fares in the long run.  The one thing you fail to mention is that lobbying is not just reserved for the corporations, but there are a lot of non-corporate special interests that also lobby effectively for their various agendas.  In this I can agree with you, the whole lobbying industry is what may lead to our downfall.

I believe he was saying the GOP is against universal health care but the NY Times article says that the Democrats are going against it also.

I disagree that the only alternative to the corporate noose we have around Washington is Socialism.  There can be a more happier medium that still allows capitalism, but with regulation on its influence in politics.    And I agree there are other lobbyists, but they simply do not have the clout that corporate lobbyists do in getting their agenda through here.

There is a difference between a capitalist economy with some socialistic programs and pure socialism.  I fail to see one pure socialistic country in the so called first world that is succeeding.  There are many that may not be first world that have failed, or are failing miserably.

Here we go with the man made global warming  (Or is it climate change now? First it was global cooling so it's hard to keep track.) cult who believes the big ball of fire in the sky called the sun has no effect on the climate. Al Gore is making a killing off you cult members with his carbon trading ponzi scheme. The Earth has had both hotter and colder cycles and will continue to after we are gone. Get over it.

You don't think the NRA, or the NEA have clout?  Neither of these are corporate lobby groups but they are certainly effective in their efforts.  I am in agreement, get the lobbying out of Washington and all the state capitals.  Btw, this is not a DNC vs GOP issue, both sides have extensive ties to lobbying groups, and both sides are fraught with bad actors.  This is why I think so many on both sides including the corporate media are so against Trump.  He was not an insider with extensive inside the beltway experience and quite honestly is a threat to their elite leadership positions or power.  Of course, like most Mr. Smith's, he may soon succumb to the insiders as well.
