Emergency Survival Kits

To my Canadian Peeps,

 

Lately I have seen several "Emergency Survival Kit" advertisements on tv....you know for $99.99 you can buy a kit that feeds a family of 4 and the food has a 25 year expiry date.  Then, while talking to my neighbour she revealed that they have a stash of such.  Like....really?  Wow!!!!

 

While I spent 51 years in Canada I don't ever recall hearing such information of emergency preparedness kits and stock piling nonperishable food.   (No, I wasn't living under a rock.) 

 

So my question is...is this just an American thing (like guns) or should I be hoping on this bandwagon?

Emergency preparedness kits are a good thing to have.  Just look at the news of when natural disasters hit an area.  The grocery stores get gutted right away and if the area is shut down then that means no trucks to bring in new supplies.  IMO everyone should have at least a month supply.  Some churches say to have a year supply.

It makes more sense if you live in an area that is prone to natural disasters. In Florida, for example, the threat of hurricanes is very real. The entire road was blown out last year near my dad's place and the power was out for days. Some people can go overboard with the paranoia, but in certain regions it makes total sense to have some stuff stockpiled. Just in case. Especially if the roads are out or blocked by debris.

That's why we have crazy shows like 'doomsday preppers' and reality shows where people are trying to survive a 'zombie apocalypse'..like for real??

For how many days does the $99 kit feed a family of four? Are there guarantees that the whole family will enjoy the meal(s), even with kids who are picky eaters?

That's what my take away feel is....why would I want to hold on to dried (and probably tasteless) food for 25 years?  

 

Slim change that a natural disaster will be happening here.  If anything it will be the apocalypse.  

 

As for others who have commented on the emergency preparedness thing...yah, I get that, but not having a storage shed full of dried and canned goods to last 5-10 years, just in case.  That's just being paranoid.  No?

We always had canned goods etc but never lived anywhere that a natural disaster could really happen beyond a snowstorm.  However in many places in the USA, being cut off from available food or help can be a very real thing! (Hurricane Katrina anyone?) So 5-10 years is excessive but having non-perishibles, including dried or canned milk that can last a month or 6? Not a bad idea depending on your location.
