I'm really struggling to find anywhere that shoots 5cm x 5cm photos here

I went to a few different places to inquire for pricing... all of them definitely distinguished "visa photo" differently than "passport photo"!

The funny thing is.... when I finally got the photo taken, the person in the photo lab literally just took a pair of scissors and cut it to the proper size anyway. If you can do a perfect job - go for it. Don't give yourself a haircut with the scissors ;)

If you get an RFE for it - well... search harder for a place that can do it.

You could get a digital copy of your picture and look for a 5cm×5cm converter online. 2x2 inches or 5cm×5cm is the official passport picture of the US and you can find a converter here: https://makepassportphoto.com

And then you can just have them print that on picture paper.

I'm assuming "passport" photos in their home country are too big. Here in Canada, for example, passport photos are 5cm×7cm as well. Definitely different than the US. If you use an online converter like that, it would stretch, shrink, or deform the photo which leads to a much larger chance of it getting denied!

Again, as long as the photos are taken with the extra space in mind, a 5cm x 7cm photo can be cut down to 5x5. Most photo places that do passport photos WILL be able to do this and will have had experience doing this.

Passport style photographs are supposed to be original and not "retouched". For the initial I-129F application, it probably doesn't matter so much as they just want a copy of your likeness. But when they need the photos for the actual visa later on, they will definitely want to get photos taken professionally without having to print them, stretch them, or use an online service to convert them.

I got a professional picture done but I also ordered a digital copy of it. Then whenever I need more passport pictures, I just go to the place that prints them, and give them the picture I had already made on the online passport converter.

Some of these websites are actually really good at that.

Really? It takes 2 seconds nowadays in Photoshop to resize any digital image. Why would this be so hard? It should be a no brainer for any pro photo and copy center with Photoshop.

Or like @Horus said there are online websites that resize photos. The printer will print whatever size the digital file is, so just change the digital file. Cutting after the fact is totally unnecessary.

Just get the passport photo taken and say it's USA standard and tell them 5 cm by 5cm. If they argue tell them no I want this. You're the customer just tell them what you want.

As for the regular photos I had 6 or 7 in a plastic bag dates on the back of me and my fiance. Try to include photos with their family to show you have met them. (if that's applicable obviously)

As long as the photos are printed on single sheets of paper (one or more photo per page is ok), they will be accepted. Photo books/albums and any pictures on digital media (eg USB sticks) are not accepted and will be returned. The key is that the need to be in a format that's easy to scan.
