Hi all!

I went to an infopass appointment yesterday to get the I-551 stamp in my passport, I just wanted to share my experience in case anyone else finds the information useful!

My field office is New Orleans. Green card expired August 2017 and I thought my extension letter (dated June 2017) meant my GC was extended one year from the letter date. The USCIS guy at the check-in window stated that the letter means an extension one year from the GC expiry date, and that USCIS have recently started printing the words FROM THE DATE ON GREEN CARD to avoid confusion and people turning up early to get their I-551 stamp.

I asked the check-in guy if I was still able to get my stamp since I was early, he shook his head no, told me they would not stamp my passport and I said that I would still like to see the officer/stamping person as I had other questions anyway.

I sat back down for maybe 15 minutes thinking about what I could say to get my stamp that day. I do not live in New Orleans and had to take the day off work, as well as my mother-in-law, to travel down to the field office.

I got called up to the infopass window, the guy was very pleasant and made small talk with me about England. Did not ask me any questions related to my need for a stamp, he typed up some notes on his computer and voila - stamped my passport with an expiry of next year.

I asked if the DMV would accept the stamp and he said yes - they will renew my license for a year.

My take away here is always ask more questions / ask to see the right person. I could have walked away defeated after what the check-in guy told me about being too early for my stamp.

Good morning, this is my first post but I've been reading this forum throughout my green card process. I received notice that my card is being processed today. I'm wondering if the N400 application helped speed things up.

Hey Mrs Thb do you have intentions of filing your N-400 this month? I do, and I am thinking of doing it online. I feel is safer, since you don't have to mail a bunch of papers they can misplace. However I have never done it before and it is still a government system, so I don't know how efficient it is. What are your thoughts on that, have you heard of people filing their N-400 online, how did it go?

I have not yet applied but am in the process of starting.  Doing it online....here's a good place to look if you want more info or need to post questions.  Mind, you its not super active but maybe we'll get it moving again.

Your timeline isn't active, so I'll guess your a VSC filer?

Lucky you. :jest::jest: Can't make any speculations about the N-400 having anything to do about it....but I do know that VSC is spitting out the 10 year GC.  Congratulations and best of luck with your naturalization process.

I'm getting ready to file that myself this coming week.

This is good information.  Thanks for posting and sharing.  Yes, IO guards are pissy sometimes and take their job very seriously....but that is their job right? Good on you for saying you had other questions.  Happy that you didn't need to return.....that would have been a total bummer.

Quick (I hope) question. I have only added my CRI-89 application to the list of "My Cases" on USCIS, and the current status is "Case Was Received". I attended a bio-metrics appointment in July 2017 and am awaiting approval of my I-751 application.

Will I receive updates for the I-751 application on the CRI-89 case status? Or do I need to add the I-751 case separately?

I believe they are linked together.  The CRI-89 is the biometrics part of the I-751 application.  You should be set to go.

CR 189 is the registration of your conditional residence status, which if it follows the filing of I-751, and it is approved you be granted unconditional resident status.

For those of you who haven't filed for the N-400 yet and do a fair amount of traveling outside the USA you might find this site handy when documenting your trips.

https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/#/home

It doesn't document all your arrivals and departures but it does track all your arrivals....which means you'll still need to do some work on your departures.

Yes filing N-400 most of the time speed up your i-751.
