Devil's advocate for a second: when athletes cheer through their anthem after winning medals (soccer, hockey come to mind) is that disrespectful?

Very different context.....memorial day, you know the rest.

You make a very valid point.

In my opinion you need to take a cue from the occasion.

Memorial Day, at Arlington or in  your basement, in my book, commands a solemn and respectful demeanor. We're honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Not the question.  Why can't you celebrate your anthem even on Memorial Day?  People have funerals that are like celebrations/homecomings

Thank you for addressing the question as a whole.  I guess I just can't find it in me to get offended much like when W danced at the memorial

He was being disrespectful to those he was there allegedly to honor. It's not disrespect to the anthem I'm talking about.

Again, it's not about the anthem. It's about showing respect to those who died for our country. Arlington is hollowed ground. Hardly the place for a party.

But I do get your point. For me, it bothers me because I know a couple of people who are buried there, so it's very personal.

I won't say you're wrong, and I won't say you're out of line either.

It's a personal thing for me.

I understand that and respect that.  I just can't find it in me to get outraged

To be honest on the anthem thing, he was recently called out for being caught not placing his hand on his heart (I don't get that either but again I'm not American, we don't really do that in Canada) so perhaps he went to the other extreme

I just got back from vacation, is Trump still president?

Yes but we had some relief while he was out of the country for eight days.
