That's when things were great in the good ole US of A. Now we're in the lean years, gotta work for everything. Just the other day my boss told me to stop posting here on VJ while on the company dime. Can you believe the nerve of that guy? Trump has empowered them.

My boss did the same thing here. She went around talking about putting in 8 hours of work every day, not posting on company time, and actually having to show up and do stuff.

I heard we will even have to pay taxes now.

Really, Thanks Trump!

Just look at Canada for what? Cost of healthcare? Patient outcomes? % of GDP?

I thought it was pretty clear, Wait Times.

So only "seriously sick" people deserve and require healthcare? Preventative healthcare that includes  check-ups, patient counseling and screenings to prevent illness, disease and other health-related problems is just a sham? I don't understand your logic.

No system is perfect, but single payer appears to be the best for everyone on a grand scale. Sure there will be some wait times for procedures, but for the most part no one goes without the healthcare they need. Usually the most critical illnesses and procedures take precedent over the lesser ones.

Isn't that what all the hubbub is about, the whole pre-existing condition?  Like I said, and I am in agreement with you in that no plan is perfect, I was only pointing out one of the big failings of single payer at least from a Canadian perspective when a specialist is needed for a serious illness.  I would think that if someone who needs brain surgery dies while in line, they aren't really getting healthcare.

I want to point out that this is utterly false.. emergency brain surgery has no wait time in Canada. Elective brain surgery does. If there's any question about this I'd recommend calling the closest hospital to me ask them yourself: (403)944-1110.

People don't die in line waiting for brain surgery unless they die for unrelated reasons. The people who need brain surgery in the first place, in non-emergent fashion, are likely elderly people who are already at extreme risk of dying due to other causes. So of course, while they're in line for brain surgery, they have a great chance of dying of cancer, heart disease, liver disease, lung disease, etc. If the situation with their brain merits emergency treatment, which includes "surgery", they are given it right away. As is the case everywhere, this is assessed as to whether or not it's emergent.

But how many people died everyday in the US (pre ACA) because they couldn't afford or had no access to healthcare? I don't know of many people who didn't have health insurance that still received brain surgery or any other highly expensive procedures with no means of paying for it.

I don't know what the numbers would be when you compare Canadian Universal Healthcare to the old US healthcare system (pre ACA), but I'd be willing to bet that more people went without any kind of healthcare in the US than in Canada. At least the basis of single payer is that everyone gets healthcare no matter the cost.

Not brain surgery, but still appropriate.  I was basing my comments on the article below.  How do they distinguish between "medically necessary" and an "emergency"?

Paul Ryan explained it, they do have access to health care, they just need to pay more in premiums than they have in income.

Bed shortage = move elsewhere. In order not to do this, they must have refused. Obviously due to privacy reasons the article won't say why they didn't take a transfer. My sister dealt with bed shortages at UCSF Medical Center delaying her treatments when she had several rounds of chemo and 3 or 4 bone marrow transplants for leukemia over the span of 20 years, before she finally beat it.

Indeed this will happen as people only allocate so much space. However, it's clear one of the problems with the US is far too much space caused by egregious spending. So if one wants to know one of the culprits of wasteful healthcare spending, there is one. If this were a consistent issue, more money would be allocated to increase the amount of beds.

This tragic incident had nothing to do with Canada's healthcare as a whole.

Again, not really saying single payer is bad, just pointing out it is not perfect.
