Has anyone actually received a SS card just from checking DS-230?

My wife just got her CR-1 and entered through Detroit Tuesday. She has a job and her employer is anxious about her SSN. I have told her employer she will get it automatically but now I am not sure. Has anyone actually gotten a Social Security Card JUST by checking the box on the DS-230? Does USCIS actually forward these to the Social Security Administration or should we go to our local office and start the process now?

The word I've read was that some have gotten the SSN by checking the box and some have not. It might be best if you two went to your closest SS office and make your own application. Probably, it will only take you a few minutes - depending on how many are in front of you.

We didn't get Jomo's just by checking any box. Still had to go to the SS office.

It has been suggested in another forum that people wait a couple of weeks after POE so that USCIS has time to get their immigration paperwork into the system. So I think we will wait then go to a local office. Did both of you file DS-230's or were you K-1's?

We are a company who is hiring legal aliens without Social Security numbers. Do they need a number to work, or just a work permit?

You are required to get each employee's name and Social Security number and to enter them on Form W-2. (This requirement also applies to resident and nonresident alien employees.) You should ask your employee to show you his or her social security card. The employee is required to show the card, if available. You may, but are not required to, photocopy the Social Security card if the employee provides it.

A non-U.S. citizen employee who does not have a Social Security number may apply for one by completing Form SS-5, Application for a Social Security Card. To apply for a card, he or she will need to complete Form SS-5 which is available for download. Or they may obtain Form SS-5 by calling 1-800-772-1213 or visiting the local Social Security office.

The employee will need to submit Form SS-5 with evidence of age, identity and current authorization to work from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). (The application cannot be filed by the employer.) The immigration document may be acceptable as evidence of both identity and authorization to work in the United States. All documents must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency.

To apply for a replacement card, the employee will need to submit Form SS-5 with evidence of identity and current authorization to work from the DHS. We cannot accept photocopies of documents. We need original documents or copies certified by the custodian of the record. Notarized copies are also not acceptable.

If the employee is a noncitizen, we must verify their documents with the (DHS) before we issue a card. We will issue the card within two days of receiving verification from DHS. Most of the time, we can quickly verify documents online with DHS. If DHS can't verify the documents online, it may take several weeks or months to respond to Social Security's request.

Employers may hire foreign workers who have applied for and are waiting to receive Social Security numbers and cards. The employee may work while the Social Security number application is being processed. If your employee applied for an SSN but does not have it when you must file Form W-2, enter "Applied for" on the form. When the employee receives the SSN, file Form W-2c, Corrected Wage and Tax Statement, to show the employee's SSN.

Yes, because Jomo was a K-1, not an Immigrant Visa holder. The EAE/Enumeration At Entry program is currently ONLY for those entering on an Immigrant Visa (CR/IR).

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has entered into agreements with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of State (DOS) for those agencies to assist SSA by collecting as part of the immigration process the information SSA needs to assign Social Security numbers and issue SSN cards. DHS electronically forwards the data to SSA once the person is admitted to the United States (U.S.), to assign Social Security numbers and issue SSN cards. SSA calls this data sharing process Enumeration at Entry (EAE).

Individuals age 18 or older applying at a foreign service post for an immigrant visa and alien registration, i.e., completes the Form DS-230 Application for Immigrant Visa and Alien Registration, should answer “yes” to the questions 33a and 33b on the form if he or she wants an SSN assigned or replacement card issued.

The individual should receive his or her original or replacement SSN card within 3 weeks after arriving in the United States. The SSN card will be mailed to the same United States mailing address that is used to mail the Permanent Resident card (I-551).

If you answered “yes” to being assigned an SSN on form DS-230 when applying for an immigrant visa and you have not receive your SSN card within 3 weeks of being admitted to the United States, suggest that you go into your local Social Security office.

If you have been assigned an SSN, the office can provide you with the number. However, if you have not received your card within 14 days of your SSN being assigned, normally you will need to apply for a replacement SSN card.

If no SSN has been assigned after 3 weeks or application is found pending, you will need to submit an SSN application (Form SS-5) at one of our offices.

Only aliens age 18 and over will be processed by EAE. Children under age 18 must apply for Social Security numbers at a Social Security office after admission to the U.S. This is so SSA may collect their parents' Social Security numbers to provide to Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

I entered as a CR1 two years ago. I checked that box and waited patiently for three weeks. Then I went to the local SSA office to check if I was even in the system. I was not. They asked me how long I had been waiting, they told me I could not apply until 30 days had passed.

I went back after 30 days, applied and recieved the card in the mail a couple of weeks later.

So in my experience the answer is no, it does not work.
