I'm def not rich 😂. $1320 seemed pretty reasonable compared to my brother paid. So I just went with it. And honestly I didn't even look at hotels cause I wanted a kitchen to be able to cook. It was a block from the beach. I wanted to stay close to the water so I wouldn't have to spend money on transportation and have things to do.

I stayed that long because my medical was in rio as well.

i can tell you that near the consulate and Ipanema Will be more expensive . Copacabana is a cheaper area . So you can probably find even cheaper there. Especially now that's winter time.

When looking for places you might come across "post 5" or whatever.  It's away to let you know where the place is along the beach. . Copacabana is at post 1-5, Ipanema beach is at from post 6 and on.

Just so you're not clueless like I was when trying to figure out locations.

again, my appreciation for your help. question, after how many days did you get the medical results? was it given to you or sent directly to the consulate?

how far was your airbnb from the consulate? has to ride a cab? did u pick that bnb because you like the beach and did swim there? i ask because my bene has never had th chance to frolic and swim in the sea and if it is really good ( the beach) i might goad/ accompany her to do so?  i like strolling to sights they are famous for, was your place near the sites and can just walk to some? we like to run together so a park would be ideal for us.

so many questions but because we have ti stay there long we might as well know what we be up to and know how to deal with it.

i saw a video of  incidents, in rio, where locals can just grab what you have, are holding or even back packs, even grab stuff from passengers in buses thro windows. it scares us. thought of bringing along pepper spray . is this really what's happening there? is it safe to be in rio, strolling or just going some place?

pls advice...and thanks, again

It is truly my pleasure.I wish I had had someone to tell me all of this information beforehand. So feel free to ask.

My medical exam was on Monday. It was ready to pick up on Wednesday at 12. They dont send it ot the consulate and be there at the time they tell you too. I assumed it just meant I could pick it up anytime after 12, and receptionist was SUPER rude to me for showing up at 2pm. It is a VERY small office inside a shopping center.

I stayed 15 minutes away from the consulate. I took a cab ($R40 I believe). Some cabs don't accept credit cars so taking an uber can be very convenient. Thank God my friend's brother is a cab driver in Rio and he was the one taking me to the appointments and who picked me up from airport. It was nice having someone I knew I could trust to drive me around. I can give you his number if you'd like.

My sister was the one who suggested I use airbnb, found the place and booked for me. All I knew is that I wanted to be near the beach.Along the side walk there's a bike lane where people are always jogging and riding their bikes on. So you'd enjoy it very much. I only chose copacabana because a friend who went there for his interview told me it was the cheaper location.

You will love walking on the sidewalk. People are always out and about. I stayed near post 4. It used to be that post 6 and beyond were safer but according to the locals they are all the same, and I agree.

I never feared for my safety. The main streets are never empty ( before 11pm anyway). However, the locals scared the ####### out of me and I hated being in Rio for the most part. Never saw anyone get robbed to heard about it.

Yes, what you heard on the news is true. People are getting robbed in buses at gun point. Your purse and cell phone can be snatched from your hand. When paying for stuff be careful about getting your wallet out. When at the beach, don't take anything you can't replace. Stay near the kiosks that you will rent chairs from. They know how it is and watch out for their customers. You will get tired of saying "no thank you" to people walking around the beach selling caipirinhas, bikinis, cover ups, sunglasses, snacks etc.

Unfortunately, the water will probably be too cold to swim in. It had already gotten cold when I left May 9th.

Just be smart about being at a large city. As a guy  you don't have much to fear and if you're bene will feel safe for having you there too.

Here are a couple of links so you can have an idea of what an airbnb would be like. I think you can find really good prices in Leblon and Ipanema which are considered the better areas, since it wont' be summer time. The benefit of an airbnb is have the use of a full kitchen.

How can I ever thank you for all you advice? Perhaps I will invite you to NYC once you are here? or are you in the US already?

NasaMara, if you are the one who did the medical, then you are the bene, right? and the Brazilian? and speak Portuguese? For a Brazilian who speaks Portuguese, you sure speak perfect English..did you study here or come from an English speaking family? I know this is now personal but i am just amazed with your talent:)

My bene is Portuguese and speaks English, as well, but not as fluent as you. Which is why I worry about her getting a license as a nurse here as she's not good at it.

Am I chatting with a female or a male? Your kindness and generosity make me think you are female. Am I right?

I ask all these questions because I don't want surprises, effects of which may be damaging, esp because my bene has no clue  about a lot of things, having been in the outside world only since last year when i fetched her from the convent. She's been a nun since age 17:), and very kind. Surprise! ? There's more....

This is the reason I need all the help I can. Being a foreigner to Brazil and not speaking the language, I find myself so busy and stressed with all the planning.

And security / safety issue is very major for us, as I am not a guy, but a female.

This is why your guidance and all the info shared are very much appreciated.

So now you have a better idea  who you are helping...

Yes, I'd appreciate the cabbie's name and contact no. as she is one scaredy cat who is not much help in dealing with her own home environment which is , also, very  foreign and strange to me:(.

We feel like 2 blind individuals groping in the dark as we navigate the process of bringing her here to the US.

You are the light that is guiding us and for this you are our angel.

I will let Vanice read the links, too, but decision wise, it' s mostly up to me, as she is like a toddler in our world.

I hope you can guide us more re things I can't ask yet because I don't know  what to ask yet: My mind is just full of my own disclosures to you.

Will come back to you once my mind is cleared of the personal stuff....ok?

Thank you, again. NasaMara. I wish you'd be in NYC and not in far away Kansa so I can return the favors you have generously shared/given us.
