My fiance is here on a k-1, and I need to get a green card for her.  Can anyone explain the steps and process?

Have you gotten married yet?

 

There is still a lot more to do. You have to understand the ENTIRE process from beginning to end to prevent being stuck in a situation like this. After you marry she has to adjust status. It would be best for her to apply for AP/EAD also which allows her to work.

Summary = After she marries you within the 90 days she needs to adjust her status. Failing to do so means she will not have a legal status in the US to do things like work, obtain driver's license, or travel internationally (she will not be let back into the US).

 

READ THE GUIDES. It is a very high risk of things getting tough for her if things get messed up.

Even non-citizens can get a SSN.  The government requires legal residents as well as citizens pay taxes. I am not an expert, but I found this from another poster:

 

"You dont need a SSN before marriage however, it's much better to have one before you do for several reasons:

1. It's a form of US identification.

2. If you get a SSN before marriage, you can simply change your name on the card (to married name) with your marriage certificate instead of having to wait for the EAD card. (At least in NJ)

3. You can open a joint account and apply for joint credit cards early. (Joint accounts are important in the ROC process).

4. You can get a State ID (Non-Drivers License)"

The flow guide and the guides are not detailed at all compared to all the instructions you'll have to read to file the forms

I suggest applying for the SSN immediately since they won't let you after you have only 14 days left on her i-94. It can also takes over 2 months to verify her - but for most ppl it's about a 2 week process. You just don't know which it will be for her until actually applying.

Wow, they really know how to put a financial burden on citizens.  What do they do for us? lol
