Well, I left my taxes too long so I'm going to purchase a tax program online and netfile.

Question... does anyone know if the available software packages like Quick Tax accomodate U.S. addresses? I would think they do but I'd like to know for sure before I purchase! :P

Damn, you're right. It's on the restrictions page:

Thanks for pointing that out!

I just finished using Ufile to do my taxes (www.ufile.ca). You can use the online version with a web browser so you don't have to install any software. They charge you $15.95 CDN to do the return and they accepted my US Visa Card.

As others stated you can't efile but atleast you can use the software to make your return then mail it in.

What is nice about Ufile is you can make a user name and create your tax return and even see what you will be getting back or paying without actually paying the $15.95. Once you are ready you can pay your $15.95 and then you get a PDF of your return that you can print off.

I was also wondering where we were suppose to mail it to. We send it to the "International Tax Service" address in Ottawa ?? I obviously don't use the labels they sent me because my personal label is my old address in Canada and the Mail In Label is the address of the CRA Tax Center in Surrey BC correct ?? I gather it is okay to just write all the info on the front of the envelope ...

Do I have to send in some sort of change of address to them or will they change my address in their system to the address I filled out on the front of my T-1 Form ??

P.S. we were pleasantly surprised when it came up that I was getting a return. We were preparing for the fact that I might be paying this year due to the fact I cashed in some RRSPs before I left Canada ....

I may be mistaken but I think you cannot netfile from US. I had to mail my Canadian one in to a specific address for out of Canada returns. Check the specs of your software before buying

I did not know this. I have my Canadian quicktax on my Canadain laptop and have my Canadain internet provider that I dial into.

I suppose that netfile you dial direct into CRA and can't dial from a US telephone #?????

I called the International Tax Office regarding mine since I was a resident of Ontario at the end 2006 (I only moved here a few weeks ago). They told me that I file my return as normal and send to the regular Sudbury address for my 2006 taxes. I would have to do it different for my 2007 taxes though and also indicate on it when I left the country.

I ended up using Quick Tax Web ($20 Cdn) to calculate everything and save to a PDF. I refilled out the T1 Schedule with the figures generated though since it wouldn't let me put "US Citizen" for my spouse in the SIN field. I affixed the sticker with my old address on it but crossed out that address and put in my new U.S. address since I think my package said to do that (I put it away now, I can't remember exactly). Mailing it off Monday so hopefully it'll be fine. My taxes aren't complicated. Just one T4, a T5 and interest paid on student loans, that's it.
