A friend in California received his green card after K1 visa and marriage. His card lists him as female

What can he do and does it costs  him money to correct this?

all his paperwork and visa lists him as male

Form I-90 is what your friend must fill out. He will need to list that DHS made the error on his gender when they made the card. There is no fee required if it's at fault of USCIS. Read the instructions carefully, and your friend will need to send his green card back to USCIS, but in the mean time he can also schedule an InfoPass appointment for a temporary I-551 stamp in his passport while he does not have his green card in his possession for proof that he is an LPR.

Makes sure he verifies that on the AOS application he used for his initial green card he stated himself as male and not female, as if he did, then he'll be on the hook for the application fee, otherwise the process is the same and USCIS should correct the error, regardless of who's fault it is.
