A question about starting a business...

I'm in the process of forming an LLC and all these forms are very confusing to me. I'd rather not hire a lawyer if I don't have to. I thought since I did the immigration stuff on my own surely I could do this too. The Indiana website says that I need to file for a federal tax number before I file for the LLC. What I am getting from the federal site if I understand it correctly is I need to do the LLC first. Can anyone help me figure this out or point me to a startup business forum??? This is driving me crazy.

Life is a ticket to the greatest show on earth.

For about $500 (less usually) and half an hour in an attorney's office - you can lay it out, and have him/her do it for you (including any public notices, etc required). They can look at your particular situation and pretty quickly advise you on the best routes... Money well spent when you're staking a business on it.

Yeah I am leaning towards a lawyer. I've spent all day reading stuff and it's looking like I can't do it myself because I have too many questions.

I've done it a few times - it really is best - not that expensive really - most will do it for a fair price (including any fees you have to pay).. and they'll cover all your bases. (You can take the cost off on your taxes too by the way ;) )

Quick Edit: If you've got a logo or a saying..they can copyright that for you too..one fell swoop..
