On the other hand, as the USC, I can see how a lot of Americans just assume that immigration is this easy peasy process and that it's "easy" to move to the US because we're a nation of immigrants. Most Americans are so totally oblivious to the rules. My parents were shocked at how complicated the whole thing was. I've had the same experience. Most people I know are shocked that the entire process is so lengthy, costly, etc. Which is why it somewhat annoys me when said people have strong opinions on immigration reform, etc. in the US, considering they don't really know how the current system is structured in the first place!

Exactly! I agree that illegal immigration is an issue, but for me it seems like he already have such insanely strict policies in place. Just look at how long AP lasts for some people in some MENA countries. It's crazy. It's hard for me to imagine a stricter process honestly!

 

I kept trying to tell my dad: they already vet people pretty hard in certain countries and he refused to believe it. I think people can't even imagine how much red tape there is unless they actually have to go through it themselves.

Exactly my feelings! I think that there are definitely things that could be revised or updated but for the most part, USCIS knows what they're doing.

 

I lived in the UK as a student and most of my US friends/relatives couldn't believe I wasn't able to stay and work (I couldn't get the equivalent of H1B - it's really hard to get!) Most people don't know that you can't just walk into a foreign country and decide to live and work there.

I've lived abroad in a number of countries too. I know that the UK has extremely strict immigration policies, even more so than the US. Most Americans think you can still just move to Canada at the drop of a hat, haha. Not true. There are some countries where you can bum around and live on tourist visas and it's not a big deal, but when it comes to being an official resident it's always way more complicated than it seems.

 

I'm actually pretty pleased with the US policy of the spouse visa! It's awesome that we're essentially done with immigration (apart from ROC). Here in Russia, no such policy exists. You have to enter on some other type of visa (right now I have a private visa) and the apply for a "residence permit" and it's much more annoying to do than the CR-1 visa was. I like that the spouse visa in the States essentially gives you all rights in one fell swoop once you get it. It's pretty convenient compared to here.

Yeah I think the UK is stricter than the US, especially in the last few years. I really wish people knew more about the process and how challenging it is! I think I could have probably lived and worked in Turkey easily, had I wanted to, but I don't speak Turkish and love my job here so didn't really make sense for us.

 

I'm pretty pleased as well, though we did the fiance visa! Marrying within 90 days something I ended up explaining over and over to people, but overall, so far so good. I know that, for example, marrying a UK citizen doesn't necessarily give you the right to work in the UK, which would be really irritating, I think!!
