Constant mistakes at the DMV

My experience this morn at dmv: 
Me- hi I'm here to renew my DL as I have an extension on my green card 
DMV worker- (with an attitude) no that's not the form we need I can't do that 
Me- yep this is the form you need, it's my I-797
DMV worker- let me go talk to someone but no this won't do 

Returns a couple mins later after blatantly being told she's wrong and proceeds to sort out my application without apologizing or acknowledging she was wrong lol

 

moral of the story is DMV workers don't know what they're talking about, have zero customer service skills and you should never just accept their verdict.

2 years ago I had to return to the DMV 5 times down to them forgetting to send off my green card info to the appropriate party on every visit

Unfortunately that just how it is. The DMV is one of those places all Americans dread having to go to, generally speaking. Does your city have more than one DMV location? Sometimes certain offices are nicer than others. Might be worth looking into if you're having particular trouble with the staff there.

I am convinced that USCIS and DMV staff mostly come from the same training camp.... same (awful) attitudes in abundance..

There are a few in each direction approx every 20-30 miles but Iv simply learnt to just explain to them why they're wrong until I get my own way now

The Social Security people are the exact same. When I went to get my SSN in 2014, the woman I saw had less enthusiam than 2 week old roadkill, more attitude than a diva and refused to believe my stamped visa proved permanent residency. Then she randomly started believing it was, but had an attitude about it like I or the government implemented this policy just to annoy her. After that, she said CBP had put my first and middle name into the first name field and for that reason she could not issue me with an SSN unless I go home and call CBP to get it fixed first.

 

I kid you not, right after she said that, she printed off a letter and gave it to me - it stated my new SSN card would be in the mail in a few days and sure enough it was.

 

I don't know where people like that get off but job roles in the DMV and the SSA attract them likes flies to poop.

 

As an aside, I did actually call CBP when I got home and they said the reason the SSA saw the two names together is because they just have a "given name(s)" field or something like that. I've never had an issue using my SSN so I just left it.

Thanks for sharing. How long did they extend your license based on the I797?

I imagine that DMV employees start off much more enthused about their job in the beginning. But i'm sure it grinds you down real quick. It's like someone said, no one ever really wants to go to the DMV, it's more of an obligation, so i assume it's rare for a DMV employee to encounter someone in a good mood. It's just a miserable experience for everyone involved. Same with call centers. I hated working for them and I hate having to call them. 

 

I've been pretty lucky with the DMV. My immigration status has lead me there more often than any American I know. Probably just because i'm in Idaho and live in a relatively small city. Everyone here is obscenely friendly. So i've never really had a bad experience. My immigration status is probably something a lot the staff have never encountered so they always have to pull out their folder with the different guides for different situations and most times have to ask a co-worker for help. They've never been rude or hostile towards me.

 

Same goes with the social security office.

Only been there once - don't (ever) plan on going there again!

Unfortunately regular DMV and USCIS visits are inescapable right now.

I'm afraid that because the woman serving me barely acknowledged my existence and then shuffled me away when she was finished I don't know how long they extended it for, guess thatl be a surprise if I ever receive it in the mail (they gave me a 1 month temporary paper one)

So an update... I received my new DL (yey) and the expiration is randomly my birthday of 2021... not sure why they picked that but I'll take it haha better than the 1 yr I was expecting

Hi guys,

     My NOA is in July, and GC is about to expire. I don't have a stamp yet. I renewed my DL in California online. Was not asked for any proof of status whatsoever, and paid the same fee. The DL arrived in the mail 2 weeks later, extended for 5 years. No questions asked...
