My fiance tested positive for weed on a urine test for his medical exam. I knew about occasional smoking, we've spent a lot of time together, he doesn't abuse. But he screwed up and smoked about a month ago thinking he wouldn't be tested and it wouldn't show up. I am, of course, furious, but there is enough love to want to get past this. Should he even bother trying an interview?  He is prepared to do therapy and follow up drug tests and we will wait out another year, if that's given as an option, as I have read here. If it's an automatic denial, we won't waste time and money and further heartache on an interview.

Was he also asked prior to the tests if he ever smoked and if so, what was his answer?  They are supposed to ask, lying and then testing positive could be a bigger problem then if he admitted.

I agree with Ontarkie  (depending on his definition of occasionally) you'd have to smoke more often for it to stay in your system longer than a month.

Yes, he was asked, he was honest, had told his personal physician years ago that he used occasionally for anxiety instead of alcohol or prescription drugs. So it was on his record and he knew that. I'm resigned to a no-go at this point, after a lovely 3 years of a fun and fabulous time.

If he was asked and honest most likely he will be asked to undergo a series of tests and counseling and will have the 1 year ban. You should be able to overcome this. In my honest opinion I would not call it a no-go.

Thanks for input. I don't think I have the emotional energy to go through with it. Heartache.

Your answers were it's not an automatic denial, that he'd likely need to do counseling and tests and that you most likely would get that extra year.

Those are the premises you started out being alright with.

I tend to agree with you though, if you can't handle just hearing repeated the obstacles you had already set out to overcome, you will probably have a hard time actually going through it.

Sleep on it though.. talk it over with your fiance. You have already a lot of time and emotion invested.

Hey IndieGirl, this sucks to hear :(

But, it might not be an automatic denial. Also long distance relationships are unique in that they push our limits and boundaries. They make us contemplate and even achieve things we didn't think were possible. If this is someone you want to spend your life with think of all the other obstacles in life over the years you might face together. Don't give up if you can help it *hug* My fiance is not able to enter my home country until he obtains a new visa (because of a previous overstay) but we want to get to the other side of this together. It won't stop me from visiting him as much as I can.

I hope you're able to work something out. Let us all know if there's anything we can do and maybe someone on here has been in a similar situation who can offer their help.

Good luck!

Hi IndieGirl, I am sorry to hear. Just out of curiousity, was he aware that they would be doing a urine test? I am at AOS stage so not sure if medical requirements are the same but would like to know on what basis they decide whether or not to drug test you.

Became a citizen 6/2024. Now filing for my mother.
