Connecticut Driving

Anyone have any experience of emigrating to CT and driving? I know it varies state to state, I actually contacted the DMV there but received two different answers by email - I don't think they even had any idea where I could drive on an international licence (before any "helpful" people tell me to google it). Anyone have any gems of wisdom? Have applied for an international licence just in case.

Thanks I didn't think of that, I'll try once I have moved.

I just moved to Connecticut on the K1 visa almost 1.5 years ago now. Getting a license will be difficult since you're not from North America. You'll likely need to take a driving test. I'm from Canada so I just had to pay a bunch of fees, wait at the DMV for about 2 hours, and I got my CT driver's license that same day. But I'm sorry that I read if you are coming from a country that is not within North America, it's trickier. Search... "CT out of state driver's license" or something like that and you'll likely pull up what I found while I was searching for answers. Good luck! When will you arrive?

I lived in CT previously with a J1 visa and you can drive here with an international license for up to a year. Later I got my CT license and surprisingly it expires after 6 years of issuance, like a regular license, instead of when the i-94 does.

I would be careful because when immigrating on a K1 you have the intention of becoming a permanent resident. You should look into what your DMV requires for the time span for new residents to get their licenses switched to CT because you will have to follow those rules. We just found out that Maryland requires my husband to be driving on a Maryland license after 60 days because he has the intention of becoming a resident in the state, CA only gives people 10 days to switch the license over. Most states will require you receive the state license within 30 or 60 days.
