Complicated situation...I am self-employed and have a very limited policy for myself...and they won't add her until she gets permanent residency. End of story! Sounds ridiculous, but that's the way it is. Looking into some of the options mentioned. Thanks for the input.

Catch-22. Can't get a job, because no work permit. Not a permanent resident, either. No job, no job benefits like insurance. Like I say...they won't even give her a state ID card! Our tax dollars at work!

Can you add her to your lease? You could also (at least at bank of america) add her to your bank account and your credit card(s). If you can't get evidence then you will simply have to tell them at the interview. In the meantime, I'd shop around a bit. I was easily added to my husband's blue cross (and also my son who has a differnt surname then both of ours) with no problems at all (didn't need to submit a thing). Bank of America gave me both a bank account and a credit card in my own name (partially secured credit card) with no problems at all when I didn't have a SSN.

Tito,

When Digna got here I applied for a CA ID and not a license because she was not ready to drive. The ID was apparently good for only 3 months. We opened joint accounts and that was evidence for our AOS interview. Her CA ID expired on 3/31 and she got her Permanent Resident Card of 4/5. Now, because she does not have valid CA ID, she cannot do any banking, even though she has a Permanet Resident Card issued by the US Govt.

Anyway, have you tried Kaiser???? Evidence of health insurance would be great at the AOS interview.

As far as the CA ID, take any communication that you have as backup so that she can get her state ID. Try the DMV office on North Ave. in Carmichael. They were helpful. Has she got her SS card???

Best wishes, John

An not do any banking, do you mean work for a Bank?

I was added to my wifes insurance.

Usually travel insurance would be no good as of course you are no longer travelling, a one way trip.

Some of the plans I have seen for non USC's assume that you will return to your country, so they will pay emergency travel expenses and that's it.

I have been trying to secure health insurance for my now wife (who arrived on a K-1 Visa) while our AOS application is pending, but I am told by the insurance salespeople that they won't insure unless and until the alien is a permanent resident. Cannot get credit because no job, no job because no work permit, work permit application is pending. Can't get auto insurance because wife doesn't drive; can't drive because DMV will not issue license OR EVEN A MERE ID CARD because K-1 has now expired, even though the AOS application is pending. This is all one big circuitous chasing of a tail.

So...what's the deal with health insurance for aliens who are not permanent residents? They want all this evidence to issue a green card, but the evidence they want requires a green card. Any comments or thoughts?

My husband got his SSN about a month after he entered the country on his K1, and I have BCBS of GA. After we married, I was able to put him on my insurance through work, with only the SSN and marriage certificate - same with bank accounts. He had to wait for his EAD to get a driver's permit. I guess all this is state by state. Some states are different than others. Don't know why.

Have you applied for her work permit? That's the only way she can get a job, if you want her to work that is. EAD when filed concurrently with AOS usually takes about 3 months to be processed and get card in hand. That serves as part of my husband's ID as well as his driver's permit. Believe me, the EAD does help...at least it has for us in some ways. Hasn't helped with getting a mortgage though. :(

The DL and permit depend on the state. In FL you can get an ID, permit, DL all with proof of the I-94. My fiance applied for and got his SSN a week after arriving in the country.

You don't need a DL or an SSN to get married.

Don't despair, step back, take a deep breath and do the things you can do.

Add her to a lease, put her on bank accounts, apply for social security, put her on utility bills, join a club / church that shows residency, do volunteer work that needs help, maybe audit a class at college, maybe volunteer intern in a business near by in her specialty.

I opened my with a separate bank account with Bank of America. No SS# needed and she gets a picture "visa" debit card. Instant Pcture ID.

And know this most of all, you are not alone. Good luck and God bless you both.
