I have been trying to secure health insurance for my now wife who arrived on a K-1 Visa while our AOS application is pending, but I am told by the insurance salespeople that they won't insure unless and until the alien is a permanent resident.

Is this true? What's the deal? They want evidence of insurance (car, health, etc) as proof of cohabitation, but (a) can't get auto insurance because wife doesn't drive and cannot get a license, let alone a MERE ID card, and (B) cannot get health insurance because wife is not a permanent resident. Any comments or thoughts?

I lived here for 7 1/2 years as a "non-resident alien" and had health insurance. That said I got it through work. I suggest you talk to another company however, you should be able to get insurance for your wife.

That's crazy! Regardless of her immigration status, she's your wife and should therefore qualify for spousal coverage. What is the insurance company? Perhaps someone else has insurance through the same company and can chime in on this. Also, is this coverage provided through your work? If so and you have a human resources dept., they might be able to help you, too.

My son and I were immediately added to my husband's health insurance (c/o the company he works with) the day after the wedding. We didn't even have SSN yet at that time as we were still putting together our documents for AOS. This was through Blue Cross Blue Shield.
