True, about the burden of proof. Not many 20-somethings think of things like that, though.

Yeah part of me wants to feel bad but I don't pull that card until I believe I know enough. Given privacy laws I don't think we'll ever know what really happened unless Ms. Hill divulges and truthfully.

Lacking more information about the particular case, but honestly I'm not surprised. They've done this in the UK to young couples too. Pretty dumb to bring something like a diary along.

That was my thought as well.  Why bring along a diary, one can always write things down and transfer them to a diary later.  Regarding the case, I agree, more information is needed, but I always love when the press feels the need to highlight the whole strip search.  Isn't this SOP when someone is put in detention?  If I am wrong and this woman was singled out for humiliation I will take it back.  Lastly, I certainly understand this woman was/is not happy, but apparently this hasn't stifled her political agenda.

If the information in https://www.buzzfeed.com/bradesposito/molly-hill?utm_term=.dcLwzK99Nk#.vcwyrXvv5R is true, seems like her detention and deportation was justified. She was travelling with birth certificate, old passports, college transcripts and gave skeptical answers to CBP's questions that any one would suspect she would not return back.

Don't know how it works in America, but in the UK they used to strip search young women in particular just because and as part of the whole interrogation process (that was before they used detention centers). Mostly to scare them I think. But I would say it is odd it was used in this case... there's a lot of people we've seen reports of using the VWP and being denied at the border that never mention strip searches. Based on her actual post, it seems that the searching happened at the detention center, so that sounds like it would be normal for that to happen.

Reminds me of an old work colleague my husband knows that extensively travels with her American boyfriend. She's really pushing the limits of the VWP these days, and her luck is going to run out eventually. We keep telling her she needs to decide what country she wants to live in....

This gal sounds just plain stupid though. But there's a lot of stupid girls out there that have either no idea of the rules, think they can just adjust out of ignorance or being sneaky, or think it'll never happen to them. And it was entirely appropriate to deport her...  sounds like she was doing something quite illegal.

Years ago when I took a few months off to go on vacation, I quit my job to do it. No big deal at that age. Many places aren't going to give you that much time off. The employer told me to reapply if I came back and I did.  It is plausible.

A lot of 20 somethings now have short term and freelance work as their staple. And how hard is it to get a waiting job when she returns?

That always amazes me how people can supposedly think that having a "holiday" for 3 months at a time, go back to the home country and then back again after a month get through immigration so readily. Also when and if they get caught and turned back they complain to the media like this woman did.

It does seem suspicious.

Trump

This young lady would have likely drawn suspicion regardless of who the president was, but as we all know, the reaction of DHS is often heavily influenced by the policies of the president. Trump was the one who took the leash off the dogs, so to speak. If we are to believe that DHS had their hands tied to a certain extent under Obama, then it's probably worth keeping in mind (for travelers) how heavy those hands may have become now that they have been 'freed'.

I don't know her intentions, and neither did DHS. Even prior to this story though,  I think it's been apparent that right now is probably not a good time to be testing the limits of immigration policy.

From what I understand, some European countries and Australia have fairly large vacation windows

I totally agree but on average it's about a month at a time sometimes up to 2 months. Then people have to go back to work.  Not take 1-2 months vaca then after 2 months take another vaca.
