Hi,

I cannot find a record of my previous vaccinations, so figure the Civil Surgeon will require me to get them all. What happens in the case I am currently pregnant?

Do I come back a later date, and the surgeon will not sign off the form until I am vaccinated? Or, can he give me a wavier on medical grounds that it is not safe during pregnancy to receive the shots.

Also, do they do blood work prior to the shots to determine your immunity to the diseases?

Thanks!!

At my wife's medical exam, the nurse said that they could do that, but it would take several weeks to get the results.

There is no better information than official information, so here you go :)

quote from a link above

Q. I am pregnant and do not wish to receive any vaccinations. Do I still have to get them to be able to obtain permanent resident status in the United States?
A.  If you are pregnant, the CDC's Technical Instructions direct the civil surgeon how to evaluate the vaccines you are able to receive during pregnancy. If the civil surgeon cannot safely administer a required vaccine, he/she will annotate the Form I-693 by marking the vaccine as contraindicated. See the CDC "Guidelines for Vaccinating Pregnant Women" page for information on pregnancy and vaccinations in general.

And here is the link to the technical instructions for civil surgeons. You might want to read this in case your civil surgeon will try to do more (to charge more, obviously). So make sure you read what they are SUPPOSED to do (or not supposed to do) before you actually got your shots.

Oh and regarding the blood work. So they will want to do the blood work if there is no official evidence of you being vaccinated. The tricky thing I wish i knew before my medical exam (and before I got charged nearly a grand in total), is that if you don't have a written evidence for Varicella (but you had it in the childhood - the disease, not the vaccine), they will have to accept the oral evidence. So, literally, your words "I had it as a child" should be enough. I read this information in the CDC's Technical Instructions after my exam, and after i was charged for blood work for Varicella.

Tdap, mmr ans the flu vaccine are safe during pregnancy

Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR)

  • MMR vaccines should not be administered to women known to be pregnant or attempting to become pregnant. Because of the theoretical risk to the fetus when the mother receives a live virus vaccine, women should be counseled to avoid becoming pregnant for 28 days after receipt of MMR vaccine. If the vaccine is inadvertently administered to a pregnant woman or a pregnancy occurs within 28 days of vaccination, she should be counseled about the theoretical risk to the fetus. 6

Influenza (LAIV)

  • Live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) is not recommended for use during pregnancy. 5

That's from the CDC. I have always heard rubella is the thing to avoid during pregnancy- the disease and the immunisation.  http://www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/1104.aspx?CategoryID=54

Just an update on my experience:

I had my appointment with the civil surgeon and for my age (26), and the only age appropriate vaccines I needed to receive or show proof of receiving were the Tdap, MMR, Varicella and Flu.

However, being pregnant, it is contraindicated to receive MMR and Varicella so she could mark that one off as not medically appropriate. The Tdap I had proof of receiving from my OB earlier in the month, and the Flu shot is not required at this time of year.
