I'd like to hear about experiences with rescheduling adjustment of status interviews. How long was your interview pushed back? Were you able to successfully request a specific new date or time range (whether weeks, days, hours, months; I expect this is entirely up to USCIS' discretion)? Did you have to provide proof of your emergency, and if so, what kind?

My I-797C interview notice says that you should call the National Customer Service Center ASAP. If anyone has taken this route, was your call forwarded to the field office so that you could speak to a representative there (field office phone numbers aren't listed on the USCIS website although addresses are)? Or was your request simply noted down for future processing? What tier representative did you talk to on the phone?

If your interview was successfully rescheduled, were you told on the phone during the call (I expect not) or did you have to wait for a letter to arrive in the mail? If the latter, how long did it take after submitting the request?

Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

I received some answers by calling the USCIS national services helpline, which are more or less satisfactory.

My husband and I will be meeting with a lawyer for a consultation this week, since he would feel better about submitting a rescheduling request after professional guidance. I'll post notes from our meeting.

When I called USCIS, they said that requests are to be filed through the customer service as there's no way to reach the field office directly. The representative did not think evidence of the cause for rescheduling is necessary but I'm going to ask the lawyer to stay on the safe side. Also to know if any evidence should be brought to the interview or mailed to the field office.

The representative also couldn't tell me if the emergency has to be on the day of the interview (i.e. emergency happens and you call immediately). A birth would qualify as a legitimate emergency but again, not sure about the acceptable timeframe.

Notes from others would be helpful even though I'm seeing a lawyer. The more info the better.

My husband and I met with the immigration attorney.

The attorney discourages rescheduling interviews unless there's an unavoidable emergency because the next date might be 3-4 months later. He also suggests that if only one spouse can show up at the interview, that spouse could appear and re-affirm the rescheduling request (which has already been submitted the customer service helpline). The spouse can also submit evidence to support the request. This is not necessary, of course. The attorney is very much playing on the safe side. At any rate, there will be no interview unless both spouses are present.

My husband and I decided to keep our original interview date because we don't have an emergency. More like a date conflict with an important event.

@blackeyedsusan: You have a major medical need so rescheduling would be OK if you're OK with having the interview pushed back a few months. I've read about women who asked to reschedule because they were due to give birth. USCIS did not make a fuss. Your spouse does not need to show up at the interview to reconfirm your request -- he will want to be at your side anyway! :)

Our first interview was scheduled for 5/5/17.  My husband had just had oral surgery and I called USCIS to reschedule the interview. They did it over the phone, they sent us a confirmation letter notifying us they would reschedule the appointment within days and a few days after that we got another appointment letter for May 22, 2017.

Had that interview yesterday.  My husband brought up the issue that we had to reschedule and apologized for it. The interviewing officer just waved his hand and said "no big deal".  This was the Cleveland field office.

We never sent or showed any physical proof of his surgery.   I took it all to the interview but they didn't ask for it. We were approved.

Congratulations on the approval! Glad everything worked out and that you got a new interview date so close to the original.

It must depend on the field office. Mine is in San Antonio. The attorney said that, based on his experience, rescheduled appointments might be pushed back 3-4 months. He's been practicing immigration law since the 1980s so I took his word for it. :)

Thank you!  Yes I was surprised also. I always thought that yes it would delay you for months. The Cleveland office doesn't seem to be a very busy office. There was only one other couple there when we were there.

I wanted to say that when I first called the USCIS office to reschedule she told me that I had to follow the instructions on the bottom of the appointment letter and send it in writing.  I told her the letter says to call and there's no address or anything that to where to send a reschedule letter so then she went ahead and did it over the phone.  I didn't have any trouble and she was nice.

We had to reschedule ours. Original interview was end of March. We didn't get the new date till end of April, and the interview was May 24th. She approved us on the spot. So it does add a bit a time. It probably all depends on how busy the office if you are using.
