I got an 'estimate' from one of the removal companies that advertises on this site and I got an illiterate e-mail banging on about how much each 'tea carton' cost. I translated the measurements to inches and each box is 20x16x24. That doesn't sound very big. They don't even pack it for you.

Can anyone recommend a good one? Thanks.

We used Beltmann who were very good -- cost about $5k to move all our personal effects and some small furniture pieces sea freight and included all packing and unpacking.

Work paid for it so I sent everything -- probably would have taken take less if I was paying myself/

Thanks, I'll check them out.

How long did it take?

that was the bad thing - it took 6 weeks - though it was completely in the hands of US customs (something no moving company can control). It arrived at Long Beach in 4 weeks but apparently the shipping container my stuff came in was sent for secondary inspection. This was at the height of the Bird Flu hoo-ha, so I can only guess it probably had something to do with that.

We used excessbaggage.com. It was a bit of a mixed bag at first I thought the service was great, they would drop of the boxes then pick them up. However as we neared the move date I requested more boxes as we need more stuff and that is where the troubles begin, the boxes didn't come and I phoned up and the apologized and sent some more the next day. I then requested them to be picked up from work, they then didn't turn up the next day to pick them up. I phoned up and they informed me that they couldn't pick up from anywhere from the home address (even though they had picked up from my work address before). In the end they finally picked up the final box on the day that we left the country (I left instructions with a friend to call me if there was any probs), but thankfully it got picked up.

I phoned a day or two after reaching the states and they said everything was fine and the boxes were due to leave at the end of the week and we would get them in a couple of weeks, which was surprising as it was quicker than we expected. Two weeks later I phoned up again and the boxes hadnt even left the UK, no reason was given and I was told that it was always the case for them to leave then. In the end we received the boxes within 6 weeks on leaving the UK (which was our expectation), but it just wasn't as smooth as it could have been.

Everything was delivered in one piece so we cant complain to much.

Just dont ask for more boxes :)

What sort of notice do they need?

excessbaggage?

Well, to get the boxes I phoned them up and they delivered next day. For collection of the boxes for shipping I again phoned them up and they collected next day (or when convenient for you).

I had 14 boxes in all, 6x2 ft, 4x3ft and 4 tea crates. Came to around 700 quid. Incidentally, if you use all of the boxes you requested (not hard if you've worked it out properly) they give you a discount.

We used Steeles Removal but they may only be in Cumbria. We did not shop around since my husband was familiar with the company. We moved 60 cubic feet (16 boxes and some long items wrapped up). Can't remember exact cost ... >1000 pounds maybe ... but they did a great job. They came to our house and packed anything we did not yet have packed, they advised us on filling out custom forms, etc. The shipment took 10 weeks to arrive but it was winter and I think weather delayed the shipment ... coming into a New York port in February.

Oh and my excessbagge stuff took about 6 weeks for shipping. They did tell me 10 weeks (which seems to be the norm) but it was shipped off at the end of November and arrived early January. Once they have a port entry date they email you, you fill in a form online and then they email you back with a precise date once it is through Customs.

On the delivery day the driver phoned me and told me what time he would be there. All in all a really good service.

We used Robinson's International. It cost 750 pounds to transport about 22 boxes. It took about 8 weeks to get here, and once here, the guys took everything out and took the rubbish away with them... I thought it was really good! Everything got here in good shape and nothing got lost...
