HELL NO do i carry my greencard.. it is 585$ to replace, i keep it in my passport case!!! i thought i lost it in november when i was cleaning the house and i just found it last week and i scramed so loud the neighbors thought something happened:) i was so exstatic!!!!!

i have lost my california driver license enough to know not to carry my greencard with me! ha but of course you need it when you leave the country, well you dont need it to leave the country just to get back into america:) HAHAHA! so if you want to come back to america, i suggest taking it with you! obviously they are going to scan/swipe it and make sure it is still valid IE you havent commited a crime ect.

haha i have been pulled over numerous times when i was in my 'overstay' period and not once has someone asked to see proof of residency, in fact that is illegal! IMO it is pretty stupid to carry your greencard around (its like carrying your passport around) and everyone i know leaves it in a secure place at home.

for those that carry it around, do you really think a cop is going to pull you over, ask for your greencard, and deport you if you dont have it??? its a 600$ card! and alot of paperwork.. if you are thta worried take a photocopy of it in your purse.

the fine associated with it is irrelevant. the part that hurts is that it is a misdemeanor. if you have a cmit any other misdemeanor invalidates the petty crimes exemption so you become deportable. I think 3 non cmit misdemeanors can make a person deportable too. not to mention it resets the good moral character part of the citizenship application, may only be cmit ones not sure though.  why risk it to Dave a few bucks.

I was told by my immigration attorney that it was a lawful requirement to carry my green card at all times. I asked if I could just take a photocopy and keep that in my purse, he said no.

If you want to carry a photocopy and make it more "official", you can go to your public library and have the photocopy signed by a notary. You show your card and they sign the photocopy certifying it is legit. I had to certify something else and it was free of charge.

It's technically a law, but people do carry copies. Lawyers definitely aren't always right.

Thread is locked for advocating illegality (not carrying one's green card, per the law).  Do not restart this thread.  Furthermore, the OP was banned from the site but started a new account.
