Back when I first applied for Adjustment of Status we had to get a sponsor because my husband was just starting out this job (we both had jobs in Mexico, then we decided to stay in the US with his family and basically started from zero all over again) and he didn't make the cut for the income that was needed.

Now, 4 years later my husband makes more than enough to support both of us and I have my own job.

Basically, what I'm asking is if my sponsor is automatically out of his legal responsibility with me or do I have to file something to let him off the hook?

When we filed for Removal of Conditions there was nothing that mentioned income or financial responsibility and I would like to be responsible for myself, it's a lot of pressure on anyone else.

in the instructions of the i864 you have the options for the sponsor and joint sponsor to be off the hook

one of them is becoming a USC, work 40 quarters, abandon the GC or die

just because your husband has a better job now or is making enough money, that doesn't cancel the i864

so the fastest way is for you to apply for citizenship

Your sponsor is responsible for you as long as your are a permanent resident. Once you are a citizen, that commitment goes away.

Other routes to remove his commitment includes working 40 quarters (usually 10 years), if you no longer are a permanent resident and leave the US, or die.
