Can someone please clarify the following for me:

1. After interview, you are issued an immigrant visa that is valid for 6 months.  If you decide to cross a port of entry then you obtain your green card by way of a stamp in your passport (and then subsequently by mail)?

2.  Once you cross the port of entry with immigrant visa and it becomes green card, can you travel back and forth from your country of origin?  For example, I am from canada and will most likely need to travel back and forth multiple times to transfer all my belongings, etc. to the US.  Is this possible or do you have to stay in US and not leave for a specified period of time once green card is issued in passport?

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Correct. The stamped visa becomes your temporary Green Card and is used for re entry into the US and to demonstrate authorization to work..  If you make multiple trips at any time, you are likely to be reminded that the GC is for "residency" not "visiting", but it is understood that new immigrants will probably need to tie up loose ends at home... just be sure to start  establishing residency ties to the US from day one... bank account, drivers licence SSN etc...

That's so helpful! Thank you so much.  I was also wondering if I get to schedule my interview date or if it is selected for me. If it is selected for me and I'm unavailable, can I reschedule?

******* Mod note:  @DFG - this is a spousal visa case and you are getting a K1, this process does not apply to you.  With a K1 you CANNOT travel back and worth until you have AP (travel permit).  Also, please start your own thread with your own questions, precisely to avoid such confusion. ******

This is only correct if you are getting a SPOUSAL VISA. If you are getting a K! you there are a different set of rules. For instance, you can NOT travel back and forth to Canada until you AOS and receive advanced parole (AP).

Hi everyone! Just a few quick questions re the cr1 process.

1. I'm from Canada and spouse is US citizen. Do I get to schedule my interview date or is it scheduled for me? Can I reschedule?

2. We are going to start the process this end of July/early August. We have a huge family trip planned next July in Italy and it's very important that we attend. My concerns are that:

A) my interview might be scheduled during my trip and if it is what can I do?

B) if my interview is scheduled before then and I pass and get my immigrant visa, cross and get my GC stamped, can I then go to Italy? After Italy can I return to Canada and cross back and forth to move my items? How long do I have to become permanently domiciled in US from date my passport is stamped with temporary GC?

Thanks so much :)

Is the family trip to Italia going to occur in 2017 or 2018, your post is not exactly clear on that?

Answers:

  • It will be scheduled for you.
  • A)  If the trip is this year, there will be no interview.  If the trip is next year, you can reschedule the interview if you need to.
  • B)  Yes, you can do that.

Hi there :) I'm not getting a K1. We were initially looking at K1 but decides not to proceed with same. Therefore my questions from now on will be in relation to CR1. Thank you!

I'm not quite sure what this means "posts merged" "do not hijack threads started by other members" and I hope I didn't do anything wrong. I'm simply looking for some help and haven't quite understood how to fully navigate this site and obtain the help and information required. Everyone here is so knowledgeable and helpful and I just want to make sure I ask my questions in the right place. Thanks for your help and I apologize if my thread created any inconvenience.

Also, just and FYI I am not proceeding with a K1 (which is what we were initially looking into).

Thank you!

It would help if you filled in your profile to state CR-1, so as to avoid confusion and do members  can help you better.

"Posts merged" means that you started more than one thread with the same or similar/ related questions; this is not allowed as it clutters up our forums.  When something is unclear, or you have follow-on questions, ask here, in this thread, rather than make a new one.  Only start a new thread if you have a completely different question about a completely different topic.

"Hijacking" means asking a question about your case in another member's thread.  This takes attention away from their question, and yours, and can confuse members trying to help, so is not allowed either. Only post in other members threads to help them, not to discuss your own case.

Hope this helps, and good luck on your Visa Journey!
