Yeah I can see their point but I really only use it jokingly. Like he'll say something silly and I'll say, whatever or anyways. However, I have said it when he says something that irritates me and that's when he doesn't like it. I understand in that situation.

dont the guys have a point about the use of whateverr and anyywayyys in response to something they have said?

My hubby reads & writes English pretty well and understands it well if it's not spoken too fast. I'm fluent in Arabic so we usually talk in Arabic but email & chat in English. Lately I'm talking to him more in English so he'll get used to the American accent. He learned English with a British accent in Egypt.

He's funny though...........he writes that I'm his "sweatheart," "sweaty," and "hapeepy"

I give my Husband alot of credit cause he only knew VERY LITTLE english in the beginning.. He has improved 100%.. By self teaching Himself.. Sometimes he can write things easier.. cause we alway are writting (text / IM)

But my family will talk to him and give me the "Huh?" look? He was trying to talk to my Aunt one time and the calling card ran out Quick... After it hung up.. She said " Was he speaking English??" LOL.. I was Crack'n up.. She is WAY TOO AMERICAN ;)

I remembered something funny that happened last summer......

He said something and I answered....."Hey!"

I was SO shocked when he answered, "Hay iz for horsez!"

I started laughing SO hard and asked "WHERE DID YOU LEARN THAT FROM!?!?"

This is so funny reading this and realizing that I pick up on his bad habits when I speak cos when we talk I tend to leave words out cos he does. The P and B thing is also in Arabic.

Hasan can read and write I would have to say almost medium. He tries really hard and corrects himself when we chat. His job he has to speak English and write all the orders in English, he listens to English music and watches TV and he reads alot. He will email with things that he needs help to understand after he has Googled it and tried to read up on it.

The thing he has the most trouble with at times is trying to express his feelings. He says at times he wish i knew Arabic as he could express his feelings and emotions easier. Although he says it si getting much easier. I am very sure when he is here that he will learn faster and he wants to take a course to help him to learn faster. I guess we will see when he gets here.

Hahahahaha just about all of these sound familiar ! Yeah the old Bs and Ps.... the nemesis of any Arab trying to speak English.... it can make for some hilarious moments, as when asking for the "gas bomb" (meaning of course "gas pump.")

Mahmoud's English is very good, although he has some trouble with our wacky spelling. He did a lot of translating for international peace groups (Arabic-English-Hebrew) so he is used to the American accent, but he grew up hearing the British style. This is common throughout the Middle East -- the clipped "BBC" pronunciation is much more familiar there.

He also has picked up the American slang -- it's a riot hearing him say "What. Everrrr." or "Any. Wayyyy."

Hi all--Hamid started taking English lessons about about 7 months ago. We can communicate very well now is writing and in person. He speaks French and Arabic. Sometimes on mic, we have to type what we are saying, but this seems to be more of a problem with the noise in the cyber cafe. When I was there last month, I think we had to write down the word we were trying to say 2 times in 3 weeks, so he is doing great.

I like to mess with him by saying figures of speech, which truly puzzle them, but then I am left trying to explain what they mean. If I compare our beginning IM's with how he writes now, there is no comparison. I have to say my habibi must be a fast language learner--I am SO proud of him!!!! Debbie (and Hamid)

Also, having a southern accent doesn't help, I'm sure!!

PS--Still haven't gotten my check cashed in Texas, it's been since March 29 since it was sent!!

PPS or PSS (can't remember which): still trying to teach him to say ya'll correctly, but then again, my northern friends can't say it correctly either!!

I just remembered another funny from the other day....

My husband had been doing yard work and was tired and abt to take a shower and we were going to eat dinner w/ my family a little later. He asked me to fix him a sandwich - ok... no problem. Then my mom calls and says "pizza will be ready in 20 min" - so I ask hubby if he still wants the sandwich cuz as soon as he finishes dressing we've got to head out. He says "OK" so, I'm like "OK, yes, or OK, no?" Do you want the sandwich or not??? He says "OK!" UM.... was that a yes or no??? It was OK/YES! So now, everytime he says "OK", he follows w/ an "OK/YES, and a smile" :):D:P
