Hello Elisa,

it seems you have some experience here. I want to verify something. so is the birth certificate needed if a copy of the naturalization document included? I did not include it since I am from outside the US originally (Syria) and it is kind of difficult to get one now! I hope that document suffice ! :(

Yes! Your birth certificate is a required document. Every document you file will require both. If you are Natural born American, your birth certificate serves two purposes.

  1. Evidence of identity which proves your live birth and where you were born.
  2. As proof of citizenship.

When you are an immigrant, the birth details are not on your Naturalization certificate so it can serve for the second point but no the first.

That is strange! their instructions on the USCIS website says other wise. the following options mention that ONLY one is needed because it says OR at the last option given! :( right?

I am cutting and pasting what is on the website:

What documents do you need to show that you are a U.S. citizen?
A. A copy of your birth certificate, issued by a civil registrar, vital statistics office, or other civil authority showing that you were born in the United States;
B. A copy of your naturalization certificate or certificate of citizenship issued by USCIS or the former Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS);
C. A copy of Form FS-240, Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA), issued by a U.S. Embassy or U.S. Consulate;
D. A copy of your unexpired U.S. passport; or
E. An original statement from a U.S. consular officer verifying that you are a U.S. citizen with a valid passport. If you do not have any of the above documents and you were born in the United States, see the What if an official document is not available section of these Instructions.

Your birth certificate is not used to proof united states citizenship. It is used to supplement your identity since your naturalization certificate does not have parents information POB and other vital information on it.

Hello! Well, actually we sent both, my husband is the us citizen and we were told by the attorney we should send both birth certificates and also his naturalization certificate, but it depends of the officer who will check for your case. Keep calm, and wait, if they send you the RFE at least you will know which is the misssing document.

Most RFEs are for birth certificates even though Naturalization certificates are added.  USCIS considers the petitioner's birth certificate as an initial evidence.

Yes but here at visa journey I have seen lot of cases approved without the birth certificate of the petitioner. So it's probably they get a RFE but it's not 100% for sure. It depends...

Either way, your spouse will need the original at her Consular interview so its not a bad thing to plan for.

Oh wow! I didn't know an RFE will make us all feel this good. But that is a good news. We should be getting good news soon. You will be approved witin a week if you send the evidence requested.

When I saw the RFE I got so excited 😀 I'm a us citizen and my attorney  didn't add my birth certificate but my naturalization instead so they sent me the RFE. My husband is sending me my birth certificate tomorrow so I can get it by Monday. Hopefully  will get approved soon. Good luck guys!!
