I think the issue is that the news is generally reported as Republican or Democrat as if there are no other options. From the outside it appears to be a two party system with no chance for an independent.

But this section of the forum is excellent, I don't have to agree with everything but it's certainly an education of sorts.

I'm not aware who is an independent by name, maybe @OriZ. Personally I go by arguments and if I see they have independent arguments I treat them as such.

When I registered to vote when I was 18 I registered DTS (Decline to State}, in California this means no party affiliation, in many other states the equivalent is independent, and have been this way ever since. Especially with the way politics are now and the latent party fanaticism I don't (and likely won't ever) see any reason to join one.

The reason I think many won't admit their fanaticism is they are afraid of being labeled, yet their arguments do the labeling for them.

I know , it is amazing the wide range of folks in this site who represent centerist views and yet are so positive the person they disagree with have been radicalized. As a bonus they may tell you how they used to politically identify as (the polar opposite of what they espouse now) but that side became too radicalized.  It is an amazing phenomenon.

Our political establishment would like everyone to believe and comply with the notion that everyone must belong to one of the two parties - the good thing about this country is we don't have to do that. Do we have a chance? Not currently, but that doesn't matter. Some people have principles, and those principles compel them to not follow the herd. It's our votes, our voices, and our choices. If more Americans decided to not settle on the status quo, things might be very different. But it's hard enough to get Americans to care about voting in the first place and understand they do have a choice.

For the record many of my family members are registered Independents or DTS, in this state they are penalized for being so, unless they are voting for a Presidential election.
