You are in the F1 family based category.  Currently, the wait is 7-8 years for an immigration visa in that category.  Your case will stay at the NVC for another 5-6 years before

My dad hired an attorney. And a friend of mine went through the same process and it didn't keep that long

The current wait for your visa category (unmarried children over 21) is 7-8 years as stated above. If you marry someone in that period of time it will take even longer because you won't qualify for this category anymore (you'll be married). And we know nothing about your friend, so it's hard to tell why it look less time for his case.

My friend was also in the same category as me

Your case will remain at NVC till your Priority date will become current. Now they are issuing visas for F1 PD 08December2010. Check it:

Your case will be open in 5 years.

Never compare your case to anyone else's. There are various reasons why your "friend" got through the process quicker. Your case is your case. It will take at least 7 years for you. Doesn't matter how many people you know who immigrated faster than you - having friends in the process will not change the speed of your processing at all.
