Hi

I am new on this and really need help.

I married my husband (us citizen) a few months ago. When we did the marriage registered, the lady asked if i want to change my name, i said no. But then she suggested i fill up the form anyway which basically gives me option to change in the future easier. She confirmed it doesn't mean i have to change, just make it easier.

my question is, i do not want to change my name. i want to keep my maiden name. But somehow on the certificate has my maiden name but also states my new name at the bottom (im in California). Now i have to apply for green card. My lawyer said i need to use the new name when apply because the marriage certificate said so. Do I really?

can i use my maiden name when apply for green card? (on every single documents because i never want to change anyway)

my lawyer said they will question me in the interview why my certificate has a new name but i dont want to honor this new name on any immigration papers.

please suggest

You can use your maiden name. You haven't officially changed your name until you have an official ID with the new name on it.

I had the same situation, the lady couldn't believe that I didn't want to keep my name and gave me quite a fight about it (but in the end I convinced her). It's situations like these that make me homesick.

If it isn't difficult, it isn't worth it.
