Why so complicated? Just create a new Word or any other text document and type your additional information on it. Make sure that you include your full name, USCIS #, page #, and part # on the N400. The additional pages should also be attached at the back of your N-400.

Rule of thumb; never alter official government forms unless instructed/given permission to do so.

It`s not complicated at all...so easy and fast ...just fill part in pdf then screen shot  then change item number USING PAINT AS A PICTURE then insert it into word ...type at the right top name, part number, item number, A- number, page number...and at the left side type extra continuation sheet ...and at bottom signature with date......instruction did not say to attach extra sheet at the back of n-400...i ATTACHED IT after the page of that part......page 4 and I put 4a-20

4b-20.....

So if I'm understanding you correctly, you already did it the way you described and mailed in your N-400? If so, what is the point of asking your question here?

Taken directly form the N-400 instructions (#2 on 'How To Fill Out Form N-400) :

" If you need extra space to complete any item in this application; use and attach a separate sheet of paper; type or

print your name and Alien Registration Number (A-Number) (if any) at the top of each sheet; and indicate the Page

Number, Part Number, and Item Number to which your answer refers."

Although it does not specifically state to attach any sheet of additional paper at the back of the N-400 (outside of the N400), it is a common practice as USCIS scans all official forms so any additional papers within the pages of the N-400 will be omitted.

But hey, what do I know, right? Good luck!

there is no right or wrong way of doing this, as long as your enclosures are prepared in an organized and consistent and easy-to-read/understand manner.
it would be a stretch to say this is an altering of the form, the OP is just using the form's format to organize his/her additional pages the way she thinks would be most appropriate. i don't see a problem with this.
