If it feels like 2017 is going to hell in a handbag, that handbag must be the new Balenciaga tote inspired by IKEA’s Frakta shopping bag. For some, the familiar-looking blue shopper is a postmodern artistic statement about consumerism, in the vein of Jean-Paul Gaultier’s tin-can bracelets or Andy Warhol’s Brillo boxes. But for others, it’s a $2,145 Frakta-you to the 99 percent.

There’s nothing new about “poverty chic,” or the controversy it inevitably generates. Historically speaking, the rich have tended to dress down (or at least give the appearance of doing so) at times of vast income inequality, whether the ancien régime, the Roaring ‘20s, or the Trump era—which, in addition to the Balenciaga bag, has already brought us $600 duct-taped sneakers and designer jeans that are not just distressed but mud-stained, paint-splattered, or shredded beyond recognition. (Model Kendall Jenner recently paired so-distressed-they’re-shorts “pantless” jeans with a $723 Balenciaga button-down and $400 white Adidas sneakers.) These are clothes that let you look like a working stiff (or an IKEA shopper) without actually having to engage in the distasteful business of working (or shopping at IKEA).

I think it's comical that in a time when there is a shortage of blue collar workers in the US, the kids would rather wear clothes with fake dirt on them rather than actually doing the work and making some money. Sad statement on the youth of today.

sad statement of existence really, who can wear 400 dollar jeans and not feel like a complete tool in doing so? like where are these things made, some factory in india that might collapse and kill the poor folks who make 2 cents a day caking jeans with fake dirt?

Ughh!!! Up your sartorial stakes, man!!! Ankles are haaaaawwwwt!

tips-

1. Own more than one pair of shoes

2. Invest in some cedar shoe trees

3. Use porous leather insoles

4. If you want to cheat wear loafer liners (socks)
