Bet they didn't anticipate the progressives would be the religious type to try and undo it rather than a religious-imposing King.

Possibly.  This is one of the reasons I don't think the US will ever turn into a Venezuela.  It is too difficult for any President to display the same amount of power or influence over Congress, SCOTUS, or the individual states.

Besides, chances are there would be a 2nd American Revolution way before things got nearly that bad. We joke about the MDLs and MDRs, but at its core, both sides know what they do not want America to be. There may be differences in opinion as to what America should be and how to get there, but there is also consensus on what it should not become.
