Hello,

I just started filling out the I-129 for my love in Japan and I have a few questions that have been sticking with me and preventing me from sleep. Unfortunately, I'm sure these days will continue until we officially can be together.

1) Proof of relationship
We have about 4-5 photos together and that is about it. We both aren't very photogenic people and kind of hate getting our photos taken. I have one photo that officially has a date on it,but it was taken using one of those famous Asian photo booths where you can add decorations and such so we might both look like we have bigger eyes and better skin (would that be a problem?) The rest of the photos are part of us where we are only showing our hands or both covering our faces.

Would 4-5 photos be enough for a proof of relationship?

2) Evidence of meeting in past 2 yrs

I have a tendency of being a bit OCD and clean everything out including my emails so I am having a hard time locating my actual ticket/itinerary for my trip to Japan when I visited him. I do have the stamp in my passport, but would that be enough? The only other evidence is that photo with the actual date imprinted on it, mentioned above. I'm trying to see if any of my friends somehow kept the itinerary I sent them to give them a heads-up when I visited Japan.

3) Translating conversations/Proof of relationship

Most of our conversations are done through an app kind of like "messenger" on FB and they are all in Japanese. I made screenshots of some of our conversations with the date of the conversation to just show that we have been keeping contact. Would I have to get this "officially translated" if I wanted to use them as evidence or could I translate them on my own? If yes, where would I prove that the person who translated is certified? Do I add a document that states that with his/her signature or write it in the "interpreter" section in the I-129? However, I thought maybe this was just for the I-129 form and not for general translations.

4) Evidence of Citizenship

Here is was I read on the instructions:
"Evidence of U.S. citizenship which may include any of the following:

A. A copy of your birth certificate issued by a U.S. civil authority;

B. A copy of your original Certificate of Naturalization;

C. A copy of your original Certificate of Citizenship;

D. A copy of your Form FS-240, Report of Birth Abroad of a Citizen of the United States;

E. A copy of your valid, unexpired U.S. passport or passport card issued with a validity period of at least five years; or

F. A statement executed by a U.S. consular officer certifying that you are a U.S. citizen and the bearer of a currently valid U.S. passport. "

I am assuming that I can "JUST" send my passport, is this correct? I got confused because I read somewhere that made it seem like I needed to send my Birth Certificate, which I do not have.

5) I-129
Part 3.5
I am unsure of what to do for the "multiple filer waiver request information".
I do not have any criminal records and I have not filed multiple petitions.

Would I choose "Not applicable, beneficiary is my spouse or I am not a multiple filer"?

Beneficiary's Info

My fiance (He) is divorced and had a child, who lives with his ex-wife and they are officially separated. They don't contact each other and he has no contact with his kid. Aka all ties are cut. I honestly don't even know if he know where they live now so I don't think I can fill out the section that states "provide child's physical residence". What is the best advice for this situation? His kid is not going to be living with us nor will I meet her.

Thank you,

Any reply will be very much appreciated.

1-2) For your proof of meeting in person, it seems a little slim. Can you contact the airline/travel agency and request your itinerary at least? Do you (both) have card statements/receipts from purchases showing that you were at the same place at the same time? Preferably you would have more pictures, from several trips, together with friends/family or in front of recognizable sights is preferred. Also, did you only meet once?

3) You can translate it yourself. Just include a signed statement that you are fluent in both languages.

4) Your passport (copies of all pages) should be sufficient. Birth certificate is more usual. Try to get a copy, you might need it later on as well (obtaining a marriage license?).

5) Correct.

Put "unknown" for information about relatives that is just that. But, ask him first. If he does know, you should provide the information.

If it isn't difficult, it isn't worth it.

Unfortunately, we only met once, but I was in Japan with him for the entire month.

I've known him for more than an year, but I just it depends on what one considers "know".
It's quite difficult because he has a phobia for planes so he cannot visit me and I am busy with my job as well.

We do make music together from time to time, but of course that obviously probably won't qualify for anything.

1) Proof of relationship is not needed for the I-129F, and Japan is a low fraud country so frontloading isn't necessary. If you do choose to provide this info (which is fine), be sure to provide more recent evidence for the actual interview later. Photos are fine, but call logs, chats, etc. are good to use as well.

2) The stamp is good and recommended to send, but it does only show that you were in the country. It doesn't show that you actually met in person on that trip. Photos are secondary evidence (even date-imprinted photos). As noted above, check for hotel invoices, receipts, etc. as well. Did you have/use a JR Pass? A named IC card? Again, you're just looking for anything that shows the two of you met in person within the past 2 years...don't overthink it. :)

3) You can translate it yourself. Include the statement (as noted above).

4) Yes, you can use a copy of all passport pages, OR a birth certificate. Only one form of proof of citizenship is necessary. I would also suggest getting a copy of your BC for the future, though.

5) Yup.

 I'll see if I can dig around for my JR Pass receipts. Unfortunately, I did not use my JR pass to travel with my fiance, but is that ok? All the traveling I did with him was via his car.

I do have receipts of a hotel I stayed in in Japan, but it was not with my fiance and it is in a different province so I don't think that will turn out well.

Ah, I guess not then, sorry. I was just trying to think if there was a way to show an official-endorsed document at the same place and during the same day as him (i.e. his IC card history + where you got the JR Pass stamped).

Yeah, that won't show meeting in person within 2 years. Dang.

The amount of evidence seems very light. Luckily, you are in a low-fraud country. I have never understood (on this website) how international couples that want to get married go into the visa process with almost no evidence of being together. Americans and Japanese are camera-crazy people - how do you not have tons of photos? Your explanations of being camera-shy, plane phobias, and staying in a hotel away from your fiance seem kind of suspect. You should devote more time, energy, and attention to the visa process. If I was at consulate officer looking at your application material, I might be suspicious. Be more engaged in the process.

Well, just FYI, just because we are Japanese doesn't mean we like photos. I mean we have tons of photos of scenery and food.
And I don't want you to think that I am not taking this seriously. We are just starting the process so I know that might not sound convincing.
I appreciate your opinion.

I wouldn't necessarily recommend this if you had stronger evidence but it could possibly help.

Are you both on Facebook? You can go to his profile, and click See Friendship on the top right, I think after clicking the three dots. If you shared the scenery and food photos, tagged him and had friends and/or family like them, you could also print that timeline too.
