If someone already had their interview, what documents did you bring and how was the interview?

1. Don't be nervous, the large majority of the interview officers are very polite and courteous and understand that the people they are interviewing are nervous. They start by asking you to raise your right hand and swear you to tell the truth.

2. The interview letter will tell you what to bring along depending on what basis you used to apply for citizenship (marriage, work etc.). for a marriage, I think they ask for your passport, driver's license, green card and your spouse's US birth certificate

3. In addition to the above, I also brought along a couple of passport photos as well as the originals of the supporting evidence documents I had sent with my N-400 application such as joint bank statements, tax returns or transcripts for the past 3 years, marriage certificate, property tax bill for our home address (if you rent, you could also bring along the rental agreement)

In my case, the IO just wanted the passport, drivers license and green card which he copied while I completed the English test. He asked me to read a sentence from one of three simple sentences on a piece of paper he handed to me and then asked me to write down a sentence he read out. The sentence I read was 'who was Abraham Lincoln?' and the written sentence was 'He led the United States during the civil war'. Then he asked me the 10 civics questions and moved on to discuss the information in the N-400 application. Since I had applied online instead of using a paper application, we verified that the system had recorded the information correctly and made a few small changes here and there (added a membership I had forgotten from the original application). At the end, he said 'Congratulations I am recommending you for approval' and handed me a piece of paper called a Form N-652 with the results of the English and Civics test on it along with the 'Congratulations, your application is being recommended for approval' checked.

Since you will probably be nervous and quite relieved at the end of the 20 or so minutes that the interview lasts, be sure to remember to ask the IO what happens next after you are recommended for approval. Specifically, ask how long the next steps will take, such as completing the quality assurance of your approval and then being scheduled for an oath ceremony and how often the field office holds oath ceremonies and the date of the next one is. The amount of time it takes to receive an oath following interview approval can vary greatly between different field offices around the US - some do 'same day' oath ceremonies whereas others will only hold them once or twice a month, so it is helpful to know how long you may have to wait before the final stage of the oath ceremony happens as this will be the next thing you will be worrying about otherwise!

The passport photos were just in case the photo they took at the biometrics appointment weren't suitable for the naturalization certificate. My IO took the photos but it was my biometric picture that they used on my certificate.

Finally, good luck tomorrow!

I dont want have my husband birth certificate with me. Am I in big trouble?

Not necessarily, his birth certificate is just one form of evidence of his U.S citizenship. You can use either his passport, citizenship certificate, certificate of naturalization or consular report of birth abroad of a U.S citizen as well to prove his citizenship.

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.
