OP: Your fiancé will have the medical and has or will have the shots, yes? If so the answer is yes. It doesn't really matter anyway as the shots are not a requirement to obtain a K1 - they are only needed for AOS. Keep in mind that the DS160 is for all sorts of visas, so questions may or may not exactly be relevant to the situation.

Not in London are you kidding. The medical facility that the US embassy sends you to in London is in the super rich area of Knightsbridge.  Luckily we have a national health service where you can get them for free before your medical thus saving you a ton of money.

No idea where that is, but with a name like that it sounds expensive.

i checked the page of the doctor that will do my medical and it had the list of vaccinations too and it said :

Sounds like i should take care of all the vaccinations definately before the medical.

i have a question regarding the vaccinations too. I've got a little booklet about the vaccinations i got. However, i didnt get any shots ever since i was a child so I'm thinking i might need new ones. Should i go to my doctor and get them already or will i receive the shots at the medical if needed?

If you want to, you can go to your doctor and ask for "titres tests" for all the vaccinations you're supposed to have. Those tests determine if you need any further booster shots. It's probably much cheaper to get the boosters from your own doctor if you need them than to get them at the medical. If you need any shots you will get them at the medical, but they'll charge you through the nose for them.

How did you end up answering it? I think it's ok either way since she'll get the shots. I just worry.

I put yes bc I knew that I DID have them, even though I didn't have proof, but also that I would obtain proof of them by the time of the interview.

Edit: also it's not until the time of the interview when they ask you to affirm the truthfulness of the application that you're technically applying.  Filling out the DS160 in advance is a time saver instead of doing it at the formal time of application (Embassy)

On the DS160 it asks

Do you have documentation to establish that you have received vaccinations in accordance with U.S. law?
Well she hasn't done her medical yet, so she doesn't want to lie, but she obviously will before her interview. What did you guys do?

Again, filling out the DS160 online is a pre-application.  You do not formally make the application for the visa until the date and time of your interview and the Embassy officer asks you to affirm the truthfulness of the application.  At that time, everything in the application must be factual and accurate, so as long as the vaccinations are complete prior to the interview, it is okay to answer yes.

Just FYI London works a little bit different... it's advisable to get your vaccinations from your personal doctor or a pharmacy like Boots ahead of time. If you expect Knightsbridge will do it.... well.. heh, you're going to find sometimes they simply cannot be bothered (even if you are a paying customer!). A titre isn't really needed in this case. Just a list from the doctor of what vaccinations they have received (updated to reflect any new ones they may have received). You don't need proof of chickenpox - if you've had chickenpox they will take your word for it. Flu is only when in season. Td or Tdap will do. And MMR. There's two doses to that... which need to be spaced apart many weeks, so if you haven't got both in time you'll get a waiver, but personally I'd recommend both... MMR is making a resurgence in the US.

For Londoners, yes... you should get your vaccinations before the medical. It's cheaper for one... and two.. well Knightsbridge has a habit of not always doing things they should be. Like giving out false information, or telling patients they don't need the vaccinations (which is okay for the K1... but will cost them hundreds of more dollars in the US when they go to adjust status).. or failing to fill out the vaccination sheet properly. The OP will receive a DS3025 when they leave Knightsbridge, it must be completed properly before they leave the building.

A titre isn't strictly necessary, but I'd advise it, especially for the MMR. Apparently you can have all the necessary shots and still lose your immunity! (I didn't know this, and had all my shots on time (Mom was a nurse) but got a titre test to be sure and, while I wouldn't need MMR for immigration, I did in fact need a booster to be actually vaccinated against the measles!?!?!)  I teach music lessons to little kids and sure as heck don't want to get the measles from some crazy anti-vaxxer's kid!

And incidentally, TD is not sufficient, you MUST have TDAP. (there have been recent whooping cough (Pertussis) outbreaks so when I was crossing, at least, they were very specific.

Anything you're not 100% sure of, just get a booster while it's covered under your single payer healthcare... I'm sure glad I did!

Anything you're not 100% sure of, just get a booster while it's covered under your single payer healthcare... I'm sure glad I did!

Losing immunity can be especially true for the MMR.. because of how the vaccine was produced then and now. In the UK there are many kids that grew up not having the vaccine at all or only one of them. Therefore there are pockets of outbreaks in the UK and in Brits who come to the US. My husband was one of those affected in an outbreak many years ago, and got mumps while stateside. Despite that he still needed the MMR vaccinations.

As for Td vs Tdap, well there's a bit of debate about this especially for those going through London. We know it should stand for pertussis, but in many cases UKers are/were actually receiving polio... because pertussis is not routinely available in the UK. If someone does have a record of receiving pertussis, then a Td will absolutely be sufficient. Despite that it still seems to be normal to accept it as well as those just receiving a Td or a tdap that really is not pertussis but polio.

And:

Quote

Sounds like a very good nurse who is trying to learn and accommodate your needs to match US requirements. My husband's surgery wasn't bothered. They just gave him a baby version even though they told him at first there was a shortage at the time and it was reserved for babies. Also despite it's not recommended for adults. Then they called and said they got some in and he could have one. Free too. Some charge for it.

It isn't worth a huge hassle if your surgery doesn't cooperate. Pay for it at Knightsbridge is a good idea. Also there has been discussion in another thread that Knightsbridge doesn't even understand it totally and give you credit for T, d, and polio. If they sign off a Tdap line (with pertussis) when you actually had tetanus, diptheria, and polio then you are signed off so no worries. Mistake? Maybe, but hey, you got signed off.

Some are wrongly told that a Td is only once in your life and the GP refuses to give it out.. which is frankly silly and wrong. There's been a couple of threads on here discussing the conflict with the P in the Tdap and what to do about that. I would say that certainly Pertussis is becoming a bigger problem here, so it would not hurt to decide to get that stateside for your own health reasons or if you can actually get someone to give it to an adult in the UK too... As the UK guide says

Quote

Td or Tdap - Tetanus/diptheria/pertussis or get DT, DTP or DtaP and it will be accepted for AOS also. The latest shot must be no longer than 10 years ago or you need a booster. If you have a record of receiving pertussis, then the Td is okay for the booster.

  • MMR - (if born in 1957 or later)-Mumps/measles/rubella. It's two doses in your life, but if you get the first dose, and 4 weeks haven't passed by your medical, they will waive the second dose for "insufficient time interval". If you only had one dose as a child, get a second one before the medical.
  • Varicella - Not routinely given in the UK . A history of having chickenpox excuses you from the shot. They take your word for it at the visa medical exam.
  • Influenza – Required during flu season only, October 1 through March 31. This was a new recommendation dated November 2010 for all ages over 6 months. Older lists will say flu shots for over age 50. It changed. The list on the London embassy website is out of date since 2009. Don’t follow it.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
